On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with Dr Robert Melillo, founder and Executive Director of Brain Balance Achievement Centers. He is also the author of the new book Disconnected Kids which helps the parents of children who have autism. The weather is great people have more free time and it stays light out longer. This is a great time to teach your kids some of the games from your youth like: hopscotch, double dutch jump roping, capture the flag and pool games like Marco Polo or Sharks and Minnows. Fitness doesn’t have to mean boring gym exercises it could also mean running around and playing in your neighborhood. We call it Neighborhood Fitness and this is the subject of our upcoming book. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Dr Roy Vartabedian a specialist in preventative care and
author of the NY Times bestseller Nutripoints. He also worked for a time as Executive Director of Wellness Programs at the Cooper Clinic with Kenneth J Cooper in Dallas. Dr Roy has analyzed the nutritional content of over 50,000 foods - no one on this planet knows more about the best and worst foods you should eat. And he kindly shared with our listeners the foods that give you the most nutritional bang for your buck. For example the best fruit is cantaloupe not an apple. the best vegetable for you is spinach - Popeye was right (not French Connection Popeye but cartoon Popeye). Best legume - green peas. Dr Vartabedian has created an awesome and easy to follow system that lets you know the nutritional value of thousands of foods at a glance. He has assigned a score for every food you could imagine and the higher the number the better the food is for you. It’s that simple try to eat about 100 points in each of the six food categories and you are eating a well balanced healthy diet. Dr Fitness must have found this weird lettuce like veggie at either Sweet Tomatoes or Whole Foods. It is green and leafy and prevealent in Crete and Greece - home of the Mediterranean diet. As with everyone, but most importantly for teens - a hearty healthy breakfast is the way to start a healthy eating day. Whole grain toast w some eggs or oatmeal is a good choice. Then have a wrap for lunch with a light dinner with some fish and lots of vegetables and your teen should be eating alright. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on cartoonist Carol Lay, Author of the new graphic memoir The Big Skinny: How I Changed My Fattitude. This was the first weight loss comic book we have ever seen.
Carol was a chronic overeater who felt she had to look to her past in order to move forward with her weight loss. So she detailed her journey through this funny and easily relatable graphic memoir. It took her about a year and half to lose the 35 pounds she was trying to lose - her food and exercise journal helped her lose about 1/2 pound a week. Along the way she has battled her temptations like peanut butter and jam. Carol, who has a weekly column on Salon.com explained her motivation and shared some of her best weight loss tips like - stay away from restaurants and eat before you go to parties.
