This year Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy were fortunate enough to have a lot of great food and drink related guests on our radio show this year. So since all the other big media stars were doing year end lists, I thought I’d do it too. So without further ado, here is the Fat Guy’s list of favorite almost healthy foods and/or drinks for 2007.
Number 5. Lesser Evil popcorn snacks. I like cocoa and cinnamon. My wife likes the Krinkle Sticks.
Number 4. Fizzy Lizzy sparkling fruit drink. All flavors are awesome.
Number 3. PopChips. I love the Barbeque.
Number 2. Holey Donuts. 300 calorie cinnamon rolls - enough said.
Number 1. Tavalon Tea. I must drink the lemon grass green tea everyday or I get even more curmudgeony!
That’s it for now I can’t wait to eat and drink my way through 2008!

We also had on Harrison Forbes the co-host of Pet Talk. The nation’s best pet show on radio. Harrison shared his best dog training tips including his suggestion to use a prong collar when training your dog. He also chimed in on the recent tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo and how he recently appeared on the Larry King Show to discuss it. He also said that a lot of bad dog behaviors like digging or chewing can be traced to your dogs frustration. And you might be able to cure the dog by exercising your dog. Remember when you do exercise your dog do it at dog speed not Fat Guy speed. Harrison talked about his upcoming project he is working on with James Gandolfini and his upcoming book. For more info on everything he is up to be sure to check out his website www.harrisonforbes.com
We led off the show with womens health journalist Karen Bridson author of the book Secrets of Skinny Chicks. Karen interviewed 25 skinny women to learn exactly how they got in shape. She purposely chose women who were not naturally skinny to see what they did and didn’t do to achieve their weight loss goal. It seems that in order to lose weight you must be very mindful of your eating and to exercise a lot more than you think is enough. Her book also touches on the dangers of overdoing it. She shares a very personal story of a friend of hers who suffered from an eating disorder. Please check out her book at Amazon, Barnes and noble and other bookstores.
And we ended the show and 2007 with a great interview with one of our BFF’s Jennifer Nicole Lee. JNL shared some of the exciting things she has planned in 2008. She has got calendars, ebooks, dvds and lots and lots of photos on her website www.jennifernicolelee.com.

Just as everyones perception of portion sizes have been distorted it seems that our perception of what fat people look like has also been distorted. A recent study by Dr. Matthew M. Davis, a University of Michigan professor of pediatrics and internal medicine shows that parents are the last to realize that they’re kid should drop a few pounds.
Here’s a tip from the Fat Guy to determine if you have a fat kid - if you are buying clothes for your kid and it has an L or XL then you’re kid is probably overweight. I don’t know if you knew this but L stands for Large and XL stands for Extra Large. you see that is not just the size of the shirt it is also the size of the person wearing the shirt.
Here’s a recap of the results of the study… The Michigan researchers said that, too, suggests parents underestimate their children’s weight.
If your kid is overweight here are three easy things you can do…Weight Loss Tip 1-stop bring junk food into the house. The last time I checked kids don’t do the shopping and most kids are not going to waste their allowance on Pop Tarts. Weight Loss Tip 2-don’t let your kid weasel out of PE make sure your kid does some physical activity every day. Make him walk the dog, make her play outside whether they want to or not. And Weight Loss Tip 3-no liquid calories - more water more watered down fruit juice. That’s pretty much all they should be drinking.

On tonight’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy get the skinny about Happy Days and Healthy Living from one of the stars of Happy Days Cathie Silvers who played Jenny Picolo in the hit sitcom. Cathie told us about her transition from child of Sgt Bilko, Phil Silvers to growing up in Orlando, FL to going back to Hollywood onto the set of the TV show she herself grew up watching to being a mom and having her teenage daughter encourage her to be the healthy living expert that she is now. Cathie had some great tips about how to transition from being a meat eater (go anti-biotic free and wild fish) to a vegetarian (go organic to avoid pesticides, herbicides and fungicides to a vegan (no dairy, eggs or animal products all the way to raw (no/low heat cooking). She is the host of the Healthy Living Show and the Healthy Living Kids Show. She also is involved in www.organicfarmersmarket.org where you can get all kinds of organic products. They might be undaunted professionals, unapologetically sexy or simply dynamic women who break the mold, Hot Mom’s empower each other to redefine motherhood. It is more attitude than look. Check the site out at www.hotmomsclub.com

Food journals are great ways to lose weight and the Fat Guy is always trying anything in order to lose those last 20 pounds. So take a peek into his food diary. You never know what he’ll write. Somehow he can stay compliant to writing on Twitter but he can’t fit in exercise each day. That’s right, moments after he eats something the Fat Guy Twitters about it and you can follow him so that one day if you try real hard you too can look like the Fat Guy. Please go to www.twitter.com/fatguy

Earlier this week my wife had a stomach virus. It was so bad she missed work. She tried to pin it on some bad hummus, but I’ve watched enough House and Scrubs to know it was a virus. Now just a few days later boom! I get confirmation of my theory from the New York Times.
According to them…Cases of norovirus — commonly known as the stomach flu — have spiked in recent weeks, the city’s Health Department announced this morning. Emergency room visits for vomiting and diarrhea — the virus’s most common symptoms — have jumped to 500 a day from 300 a day in November.
Norovirus is a seasonal illness that typically peaks during the winter months.
Here are the official Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy tips in order for you to prevent getting the stomach virus this winter and to deal with it if you get it.
- Wash your hands like a crazy person. Think Monk! You know how I feel about Purell.
- Make sure the surfaces you prepare food or cook on is clean. Remember Monk clean is what we’re shooting for.
- If you get sick stay away from everyone. Miss work, duh. Quarantine yourself from your family. Sleep a lot.
- Drink lots of fluids. PowerAde, water, tea.

It has been well established that the Fat Guy has no friends and spends way too much time on the internet. I feel a little funny referring to myself in the third person, but I have not found a better way for you the reader to know if this is a post from me or Dr Fitness. So deal with it.
While browsing through the Archives of Internal Medicine as I sometimes do on dreary Wednesday afternoons. I read the conclusion of an Abstract that said that there was “strong evidence” that following a Mediterranean diet lowers the risk of dying prematurely from pretty much everything including cancer.
You can read the abstract for yourself here. But be warned they used a large number of big words that I did not really understand.
As you know if you have listened to the Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy radio show that Dr Fitness is a big fan of the Mediterranean diet. He loves fruit, veggies, olive oil and pizza. I am not sure if pizza is actually part of that diet but it is kind of Italian.

As you may have figured out by now, I spend a lot of time online doing “research” for the show. Truthfully though it’s because I don’t have many friends. I’m not what you would call a “people person” like Dr Fitness.
So on my quest to find another great guest for the Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy show late last night I stumbled on the “Banana Guard.” Now who would need a protective device for transporting their banana one might ask. Because to the untrained eye a banana comes with a protective device already, the thick yellow banana skin. Ah, sometimes that is not enough, especially if you throw your banana in your gym bag. No one likes a smooshed banana and now you can prevent that from happening forever.
Check out the Banana Guard here and send it to that banana loving friend of yours who has everything!

A brand new web 2.0 competitor to WebMD has launched. www.iMedix.com is a “community-powered health search engine that allows people to easily find and share health information with one another in order to make better health-related decisions” according to the About Us page of their website.
Capitalizing on the “misery loves company” rule might actually pay off for iMedix. Members rate the quality of all the submitted information and can chat about their symptoms and illness with each other.
WebMD has pretty much had the consumer medical information space to themselves and it will be interesting to see how they counter this community based medical site. So next time you or a loved one is sick check out WebMD first then head on over to iMedix for a second opinion.

Look, I’m the Fat Guy. I’m always looking for the quick fix. You won’t find me lifting weights for hours a day. Believe it or not my strength training routine is trying get off my couch after watching TV at night. To say that I’m not tempted by steroids would be a lie. I wouldn’t be using professional wrestler amounts of steroids, just enough to quickly firm up here and bulk up there. I have no intention of enhancing my athletic performance I just want to lose some weight and look better faster. Is it not possible to use steroids in moderation? I’m not a big fan of needles so I’ll probably never follow through with this, but if they had steroids in a pill form….
Here is an article from WebMD that explains the “dangers” of steroids. It sounds like the usual “drugs are bad for you” kind of information….a lot of scare tactics and “Reefer Madness”-like fear mongering. You know, you could get HIV from sharing steroid needles, they’re illegal without a prescription and you could die from overdosing. In my opinion, there are too many athletes using steroids and benefitting from steroids for them to be as dangerous as the media is portraying them. Where are the ex-steroid users saying how bad they are? Is there anyone who is pro-steroids except Jose Canseco?
Here’s the article…
The anabolic steroids abused by athletes are synthetic versions of testosterone, a male hormone. Both men and women naturally produce testosterone. But like all hormones — which regulate the body’s most basic functions — throwing one’s testosterone out of balance can have wide-ranging consequences.”There are a lot of side effects of steroids,” Kenneth Mautner tells WebMD. “They are not good for you. It is like Russian roulette. Five people may take them and have no long-term problem. The sixth may end up dead.”

His new book “Stop The Fitness Confusion” taps into the wisdom of over 50 top trainers and fitness experts to get their best fitness and weight loss tips. A circuit-style interval training is highly recommended for people who are crunched for time and are looking to burn more calories faster. In San Francisco she does outdoor classes with her clients first thing in the morning. They might be doing pull ups on a tree branch one minute and stretching on a parking meter the next. Each workout is different and each is sure to kick your butt. Tina stressed that exercising outdoors is an almost spiritual experience. She says she has had clients get overcome with emotions as they workout. Picture yourself at the crack of dawn, surrounded by the glow of the rising sun, running through the woods with the skyline of San Francisco in front of you as sweat is pouring off your body. Pretty cool huh? For more information about Tina, her only accredited Outdoor Training classes and her radio show please go the her website www.outdoorfitness.com

You think I’m bad with the Purell. My wife scoured about 4 different stores searching for the elusive Purell Gentle Foam until she heard a rumor it was available at Bed Bath & Beyond. That killed a Saturday for us. Purell is fast, easy and gets rid of germs. And since I mentioned we don’t do flu shots it is our best line of defense against the flu or any other germ thing. We should try and get someobdy from Purell on the Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy Radio Show. they’d be funny.
Here is a recent article on MSNBC affriming my craziness.
Pass the Purell: It’s hip to be germ-free
Superbugs and supercute sanitizing supplies spur cleaning craze
Also along the same lines I had a meeting this afternoon with Allan Hess, creator of the Airport Booties. You wear these bad boys when you are going through the security line at the airport. Go to his website and see for yourself how many germs are on an airport floor. When was the last time you saw someone with a mop around the security line? How about never.

Drugmaker Merck & Co. produces about half of the nation’s annual supply of 14 million doses of Hib vaccine. Merck recalled the lots after this week identifying a sterility problem in a Pennsylvania factory. It said sample vials from the recalled lots, tested before shipment, were not contaminated but the company could not assure sterility of the entire lots.
The Fat Guy had a great blog entry today about the flu vaccine and no sooner as I finished reading it that I came across this article about the Hib vaccine. The recall is more than likely going to magnify the debate over childhood vaccines, their safety and whether too many | |
