They could do that, and begin claiming it all as a metaphor, but even that argument is getting stale. Why waste time wading through layers of 'metaphoric' garbage, sifting out the useful bits from the non-, when there are better alternatives available to a modern, rational individual?The whole religious enterprise falls along these lines for me. They are relics.
