| This is a confusing issue...Naturally, money should be made by offering the public a service or product. That is the basics of marketing: market what the consumers need.Do we need privatized prisons? If the reality of lobbying wasn't actually a reality, then I don't see any real issue. Money breeds competition, breeding better results. How would privatized prisons competing with one another affect competition? I see them focusing on getting prisoners in their prisons rather than being innovative and competing with other prisons. Why fight over a pie when you can just make more pie?I'm not a fan of privatizing duties left to our government. Our governments priority is the welfare of it's citizens. That means law enforcement. That means enforcing the law. That means locking up law breakers. Thus, prisons are something the government should manage.I am open to the other side of the coin, however. If anyone wants to present their case...What needs to happen is the protection against lobbying. Wherever money is made, there will be people who exploit that system. We see that now in healthcare and fake Medicare patients. |

I have mix feelings about this. At one point, individuals that exploit people in such ways should be killed. On the other hand, society can not advocate for vigilante justice... individuals simply aren't rational enough to fairly apply justice for crimes committed against themselves. Not to mention, it totally negates this individual's RIGHT to a fair trial. I don't blame her for what she did, but it was well-thought out and she should pay the consequences. I think the judgment is too harsh, but there needs to be jail time for a considerable amount of time (10-30 years).

As someone who pays his balance off in full, and representing those of us who generally spend less than we make, the banks need us more than we need them. Let them try that sort of nonsense and we'll see what happens. And if they keep doing it, just think of the shift to a saver's mentality it may engender in the future!.
I see that you're trying to imply that global climate change today is not influenced by human activity; that it's natural and we should stop bothering about it.Even if there is no human influence in the climate, a rapidly changing climate is certainly something to be worried about. The single biggest reason is that we have nearly 7 billion people on this planet and they have to get their food and water from somewhere. As the global climate changes, local climates will also change. Some will get dryer, some wetter, some hotter, some colder. The food crops we grow are typically optimized for the local climate, so as the local climates change, the plants that grow in a given location will not grow as well. And it is not a trivial activity to simply move production of a key crop from one location to another. If corn will no longer grow in the central US, how easily and quickly do you think we can move that corn production somewhere else; maybe Wisonsin and Minnesota? What about what's already growing there? It can be argued that economic disruption is one of the key causes of human suffering. Inability to grow essential food crops could represent an economic disruption whose scale has never been seen in human history. It's also quite likely that changes in precipitation will also stress agricultural systems. California is currently a huge source of food for the US, however, it's currently in a drought. How many years of drought can the farmlands and crops take before they become useless? Then as potable water becomes more scarce, there will be interesting challenges to geopolitical stability. If you think the wars over oil in the last century have been bad, just wait until we start seeing wars over water. It doesn't really matter what the strongest causes - for the survival of our civilizations or even our species, we better learn as much as we can and prepare as much as possible.Or... I can just say f*ck it... I won't live long enough to see the true scope of the suffering that may come out of global climate change. Good luck, f*ckers!!

Imagine that! A thing that costs some money now, but makes or saves more than it costs over time. There must be a name for such a thing.?
