On tonight’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy learn the inside dish from Kathy Smith on your fitness favorites like Richard Simmons, Denise Austin and Jack LaLanne. Remember, Kathy was one of the driving forces behind the original dance aerobics craze. She had exercise videos and TV shows that really got people moving back in the day (and she’s still going strong today!). Kathy shares her best tips to get you moving and off the couch. She says 1-exercise in groups for that energy and support and so you can socialize and exercise at the same time 2-Choose an activity you love, whether it is ballroom dancing, tennis or kickball. And finally 3-reward yourself for small victories. Kathy has a new dvd out called Lift Weights to Lose Weight which is available on www.lionsgatedvd.com. The dvd explains the importance of weight training, especially as you get older. Strength training improves function in order to enjoy life as you age. On tonight’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy learn all about Carole Brody Fleet’s new book Widows Wear
Stilettos.
She shared her thoughts on returning to health and fitness after a tragedy. She said it is important to protect your immune system which is vulnerable when you are dealing with such emotional stress. She feels that it is important to take baby steps in order to get back into a routine and get back to a healthy life. She says it is important to get out the house a go for a walk. Also try and eat smaller meals throughout the day rather than starving yourself and binging late at night. And if you are having trouble sleeping then try a warm bath or some hot tea and try listening to some calming music as well. She recently won the State Farm Insurance Embrace Life Award for all the great work she does helping widows. And was profiled on Good Morning America - she shared some funny behind the scenes stories. The message boards on her website offer comfort and support to widows and gives them a platform in order to share stories as well as trials and triumphs. Erica Bohm explained how the website got started and where its going from here. This is a super resource if you are looking for healthy meals when you eat out. This site shows nutritional info and even has some coupons as a bonus. Here are the rules of a healthy meal 1-entrees must have lean protein, furit or veggies and 100% whole grains 2-entree must be less than 750 calories, have 25 grams of fat or less and 8 grams of saturated fat or less 3-appetizers must have less than 250 calories or less, have 8 grams of fat or less and 3 grams of saturated fat or less. cki Donaldson. Jacki’s inspirational story has recently been profiled in Family Circle magazine. She explained that when you are doing your monthly breast self exam to feel for anything different. And if you find something then please check it out as soon as possible. Early detection is critical. She also shared some other great tips on finding the right docotor for you. She said to get 2-3 opinions and to trust your gut feeling on who is the right fit for you. She also recommended doing your own research and to find local support groups near you. Those support groups are also another great resource for finding the right doctor and treatment option becasue the people in thos e groups have been there and done that so they bring some great insight. Also try to get more iron - you can do this by eating food cooked in a cast iron skillet or by chowing down on some red meat or even beans and spinach. We learned that basically the foods that are good for your heart are also good for your brain. On tonight’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy learn all about the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk
from Barb Mock Captain of one of Atlanta’s largest teams- over 100 members. We learned that each walker is responsible for raising $2200 in order to participate in the walk. The walk is 60 miles spread over three days. That means each day you walk for 20 miles. Barb says it usually takes for around 5 hours to cover her 20 miles. When you sign up on the Breast Cancer 3 Day website you have access to a virtual personal trainer to help you train for your walk. The website features a 16 week or 24 week training program. Barb says her team trains year round. Thsi years Atlanta walk is October 24-26, 2008. And last years there were over 2500 walkers and that included about 250 men. Her team has raised well over halfa million dollars to the cause and she looks forward to another record year. Barb also shared some tips about how to train for the walk as well as details on what the walk is like.
