We’ve been recording Wellness Minutes for a radio station in Michigan for awhile now and we thought we’d share them with our fans each day. As you know by now the Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy Radio show is your source for what’s true and what’s too good to be true in health and wellness. Today, in the next 3 minutes, we tell you everything you need to know about how to train for your first marathon. Dr Adam Shafran has run a bunch of marathons and the Fat Guy has eaten a bunch of Marathon bars so they are well suited to give you running advice. Dr Fitness says to have a plan with your running regimen. Also don’t be afraid to reach out to your local running store or running club for advice and to find others to train with. He said you probably won’t get as good help from the big chains as you would from a local mom and pop running shoe store. Take a listen right now. Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy’s Wellness Minutes improve your health in just 3 minutes a day.
You can count on Doctor Fitness and the Fat Guy for inspiration, education, motivation and more tips about losing weight and getting in shape. A funny thing happened to me the other day when I was reading PLoS, a peer-reviewed open-access journal published by the Public Library of Science. They had this research that explained that you might live an additonal 14 years if you do four fairly simple things…
- Drink alcohol in moderation
- Don’t smoke
- Exercise
- Eat an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables
Now it’s nice to know that what I have been saying forever has been re-confirmed and you would think adding 14 years to your life would be encouragement enough for most people… but still a lot of people are finding it difficult to do these 4 simple things and that’s kind of frustrating.
Now the really big dilemma I have is should I tell the Fat Guy about this study? Do I really want him around for an additional 14 years?

I have had this annoying cough for going on three days now. I have not slept since Saturday. I try to sleep kind of sitting up but that does not help much. I have been living on Halls cough drops (cherry) and I have tried Musinex DM Maximum Strength - a once every 12 hour cough medicine. I was a Robotussin guy but my sister recommended Musinex which hasn’t worked any better. I hope this cough goes away before our radio show on Thursday
Here are some tips I ran across from the Hartford Courant
Cough into your elbow - nice tips
Drink more fluids - I have been living off whats left of my rapidly dwindling Tavalon tea supply
Rest more - I’d like to but that hacking cough keeps waking me up
I’d add use more Purell - but you already know how i feel about that.
Here’s more of the article - click on the link to get the rest…
Because cold and flu season is here, it’s time to review what you know about treating them.
First things first: Antibiotics won’t help. Colds and flu are caused by viruses, not bacteria. If you get sick, cough or sneeze into your elbow. Don’t share your drinking glass, and practice other good hygiene habits. Get plenty of rest, drink fluids and treat the symptoms if that makes you feel better.

Just as everyones perception of portion sizes have been distorted it seems that our perception of what fat people look like has also been distorted. A recent study by Dr. Matthew M. Davis, a University of Michigan professor of pediatrics and internal medicine shows that parents are the last to realize that they’re kid should drop a few pounds.
Here’s a tip from the Fat Guy to determine if you have a fat kid - if you are buying clothes for your kid and it has an L or XL then you’re kid is probably overweight. I don’t know if you knew this but L stands for Large and XL stands for Extra Large. you see that is not just the size of the shirt it is also the size of the person wearing the shirt.
Here’s a recap of the results of the study… The Michigan researchers said that, too, suggests parents underestimate their children’s weight.
If your kid is overweight here are three easy things you can do…Weight Loss Tip 1-stop bring junk food into the house. The last time I checked kids don’t do the shopping and most kids are not going to waste their allowance on Pop Tarts. Weight Loss Tip 2-don’t let your kid weasel out of PE make sure your kid does some physical activity every day. Make him walk the dog, make her play outside whether they want to or not. And Weight Loss Tip 3-no liquid calories - more water more watered down fruit juice. That’s pretty much all they should be drinking.

Earlier this week my wife had a stomach virus. It was so bad she missed work. She tried to pin it on some bad hummus, but I’ve watched enough House and Scrubs to know it was a virus. Now just a few days later boom! I get confirmation of my theory from the New York Times.
According to them…Cases of norovirus — commonly known as the stomach flu — have spiked in recent weeks, the city’s Health Department announced this morning. Emergency room visits for vomiting and diarrhea — the virus’s most common symptoms — have jumped to 500 a day from 300 a day in November.
Norovirus is a seasonal illness that typically peaks during the winter months.
Here are the official Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy tips in order for you to prevent getting the stomach virus this winter and to deal with it if you get it.
- Wash your hands like a crazy person. Think Monk! You know how I feel about Purell.
- Make sure the surfaces you prepare food or cook on is clean. Remember Monk clean is what we’re shooting for.
- If you get sick stay away from everyone. Miss work, duh. Quarantine yourself from your family. Sleep a lot.
- Drink lots of fluids. PowerAde, water, tea.

I am not a huge “Jeopardy” fan but I happen to like Alex Trebek and his cool, calm delivery. In Los Angeles yesterday Mr. Trebek was hospitalized Tuesday after a minor heart attack, a spokesman for the game show said. Trebek, 67, was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center late Monday night and was expected to remain there about two days for tests and observation, said show spokesman Jeff Ritter. Don’t let a heart attack spoil your career as a game show host by following Dr. Fitness’ Top Tips on surviving a heart attack:
1. Lead an active lifestyle and get regular exercise
2. Make sure you get plenty of omega 3 fats in your diet.
3. Make sure you take time out of each day to decompress either by meditation, massage, or doing something you love.
4. Absolutely essential to get a great big belly laugh every day!!
5. Give or receive 5 big hugs to the people you love. (Make sure they love you back or you could get into trouble.)
Follow my tips and you’ll survive any heart attack!!!!!

I have no idea!!!! but I hope Miley Cyrus keeps on singing since my soon-to-be stepdaughter, Rebecca, LOVES her. Former Pro Football Star Mike Golic is a great radio announcer and thanks for admitting to using steroids…10 years after you retired from football!!! I am sure you have helped many aspiring young lineman choose not to use steroids. It’s plain and simple… Steroids are for cheaters!!!! I hope Amy Winehouse stays away from drugs and just as important, cigarettes, since she has such an amazing voice….what a talent!!!

Here are some of my tips for those who are trying to help there close ones quit smoking:
1. help lighten their stress levels. help the quitter with a few chores like watching their kids, cooking — whatever will help of quitting
2.Don’t take the quitter’s grouchiness personally during his or her nicotine withdrawal. The symptoms usually dissipate in about 2 weeks.
3. Studies show that most people try to quit smoking 5 to 7 times before they succeed. If a relapse happens, think of it as being one step closer to succeeding and not failing!!!!

I have been enjoying the heck out of Christopher Bergland’s awesome new book called “The Athlete’s Way.” Christopher is an amazing athlete who has accomplished some astonishing athletic endeavors like holding the Guinness World Record for treadmill running (153.76 miles in 24 hours.) He has completed The Triple Iron Man, a 7.2-mile swim, 336-mile bike, followed by a 78.6-mile run (done consecutively) in a record breaking time of 38 hours and 46 minutes and won the race three times…and a bunch of other amazing accomplishments. So when he came on the show last night, we learned what goes on in the mind of a guy who can literally exercise all day and all night. Listen to the interview and you will find Chris to be a very modest guy and he has taken those experiences and coupled them with some of the brain science he learned from his Brain Surgeon dad to write a book that can help sedentary people stick to their exercise program. Some of the tips we talked about include developing an athletic mindset. This includes setting goals, getting inspiration, monitoring your mood and using positive imagery. By incorporating some the same techniques this amazing athlete uses to break World Records you can stick to your exercise routine. Please check out his website www.theathletesway.com for more information and exercise tips.
One of the Internet’s best bloggers and one of Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy’s favorite guests…Sweet Susi May from FitSugar joined us again for their monthly segment. Susi announced a New Balance clothing giveaway to benefit Susan G Komen Foundation in honor of breast cancer awareness month. Some of the other topics we talked about were: the Hardees Breakfast burrito that tips the scapes at over 900 calories….mmm burritos; things to think about when buying sneakers; the new Vinyasa Jump Through yoga dvd; and her favorite tip about getting a fitness buddy. We also heard about her yoga getaway with her husband to celebrate their 6th wedding anniversary. So be sure to check out the whole interview. For more about Fit Sugar go to their website and try and win those awesome New Balance exercise clothes www.fitsugar.com.
Also Don’t Forget to check out my tips on how to add exercise to your weekends. He said 1-take the dog for a loooong walk; 2-hike somewhere with an inspirational view 3-meditate using deep breathing exercises. He had more great fitness tips but you’ll have to listen to get them.

She also mentioned something about the return of the Snoopy Sno Cone Maker and some other equally wild stuff. For more information about The Daily Candy please go to their website www.dailycandy.com and be one of the 3 gazillion other subscribers to get their daily email newsletter.
And that wasn’t it, as you know the Fat Guy is always researching quality, kind of healthy, delicious snacks. And he found another one. PopChips. PopChips are kind of healthy chips. These are never fried, never baked, all natural chips. Since these amazing bites of crunchy goodness are popped instead of fried they can fit more fo them in the bag for the same calories. For example, an old school chip company might fit 10 chips in a 100ish calorie bag with PopChips you’ll get twice that for about the same calories. That’s right more crunches per calorie. the Fat Guy loved the BBQ and Dr Fitness loved the Wasabi. Try them for yourselves. Go to there website for all the locations you can find them or to order them online. www.PopChips.com
Dr. Fitness was back with his tips on how to adjust your workout and attitude to the changing weather. He said 1-bring your workouts indoors; 2-chnage up the workouts…if you were biking and running now try yoga or stretching classes 3- change your wardrobe to accommodate the changing weather…remember no white after Labor Day. He had more great fitness tips but you’ll have to listen to get them.

Remember we are now on every morning in Michigan. On radio station WKNW. They asked us to create a Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy “Wellness Minute.” So now a new Wellness Minute runs on that station each morning at around 7:40. Each Wellness Minute features the doctor and I going over 5 of his best tips on a given wellness subject like: losing weight, getting in shape, living a healthy lifestyle, etc. We’re working on ways to make those tips available to all our listeners. If you have a favorite radio station that you think would benefit from our Wellness Minutes send them an email telling them about it and who knows maybe you can hear us everyday too.
Also once again, I need you to please do me a favor. My kid Max has been doing a radio show called “Kid Power Radio” for awhile now and you should check it out. Tiffany from The Daily Candy called it “Hilarious!” This is a great show for your kids. It is kind of like a kids version of David Spade’s “Showbiz Show” on Comedy Central or Entertainment Tonight mixed in with a little Wayne’s World. Max recaps the week in entertainment and gives his take and review of what he liked and didn’t like on TV, at the movies, video games, in books and in music and even restaurant reviews. Please go to his site and download the show for your kid. He had a big show recently he interviewed Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. And if your kid sends Max an email he’ll read it on the air next week. The show can be found at www.kidpowerradio.com and you can email Max at RadioStarMax at Yahoo.com. He has gotten emails from kids from England, Australia, China and even the US. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thanks to you his show is rocketing up the charts!!!
