Marilu shared her personal story about why she got into fitness over 20 years ago. you see her parents died when she was very young and that motivated her to change her unhealthy habits. So she began a quest for what really is healthy. She did tons and tons of research and through her own research and experimentation she developed her own program. When she realized that medical doctors typically have only 4 hours of nutritional studies during their entire medical school training she knew that she better start thinking for herself rathter than blindly trusting these so called doctors who have less knowledge about nutrition than she does.

Marilu said that when it comes to changing lifelong unhealthy habits there are turkeys or weiners. Turkeys quit cold turkey and Weiners slowly ween themsleves from the bad habit. She said she would pick a bad habit (like says drinking soda) and tell herslef that she was just quitting for 3 weeks in order to modify her behavior. And when those 21 days passed she realized she didn’t have to drink anymore soda.

Marilu gave her 3 best tips to live a much healthier and happier life.

No dairy.

No red meat.

Break a sweat for at least 10 minutes every day.

But her bottom line tip was to be your own doctor and know your own body.

She might be starring on Broadway or on TV but Marilu is really passionate about health and she has created a wonderful online community that really benefits from her wisdom and passion. Chris’ book Younger Next Year. A Guide to Living Like 50 Until You’re 80 and Beyond explains how you can live a healthier more active life whether you’re 40, 50, 80 or even 100. Chris explains that up to 70% of aging is voluntary and 50% of serious illnesses you get when you are 40 years old or older can be prevented.
In today’s Wellness Minute we reveal what are some of the best selling diet pills and why you should not try any of them. Over the years we have been bombarded with diet pills as a way to lose weight… fast. And sure I have been tempted, the ads are very persuasive. Who wouldn’t want to lose 30 pounds in 30 days. Heck I’d like to lose 5 pounds in 30 days. But sadly, there are no magic pills. Even if these pills could help you lose some weight, your old bad habits will cause you to gain the weight right back. So unless you plan on taking diet pills forever I wouldn’t even go there. So avoid, the hoodia, the caffeine, the ephedra, the ephedra-free and all the other magic potions from magic doctors based in faraway lands. Move more, eat less. Repeat.
On tonight’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy were lucky enough to get Food Editor of our favorite food magazine Jessie Price from Eating Well magazine on to talk about Eating Well’s latest recipe book Comfort Foods Made Healthy. Jessie took us behind the scenes of Eating Well and shared some of her favorite recipes and foodie stories. Dr Fitness and Jessie got into a heated discussion about salads…especially how to make a salad your main course. This new book from Eating Well is an awesome collection of some of your favorite comfort foods like mac and cheese, pizza, cheeseburgers, soups, pot pies as well as desserts like pies and brownies made healthier and with many less calories. The Fat Guy loved how they were able to cut about 60% of the fat from one of his favorites - chicken fried steak with gravy…..mmmm Gravy. The book is like extreme makeover except with food. Please go to www.eatingwell.com and check out this wonderful magazine and all of their email newsletters which are filled with recipes, coupons and tips. Look for the latest Eating Well magazine on your news stands with the Pear on the cover.

In today’s Wellness Minute we share some more treadmill workouts. Treadmills can easily go from a fun exercise device to a great place to hang your coats and dirty clothes. Here are some ways to spice up that treadmill workout. Experiment with all of the buttons - mix up the incline, the speed. Also keep a close eye on your heart rate as you work out. Once you determine the things that make your heart rate rise and fall you can then try some intervals - you know 1 munute with your heart rate elevated then 1 minute slowing down. Mix it up at every workout 30 fast 30 seconds slow. If you are on your treadmill at home try moving it to a different place - try next to a window instead of in front of the tv.
In today’s Wellness Minute we share some more tips to survive eating out at more popular restaurants. Eating healthy at popular restaurants is really pretty easy. You just have to have the mindset that the chef at each restaurant is really your personal chef and have them make whatever you order in a more healthful way. Some people call me high maintenance when I order at a restaurant - no sauce, dressing on the side, hold the mayo, can you grill that instead of frying that, etc. At Olive Garden go with their minestrone soup and at Red Lobster try their jumbo shrimp garden salad - ask for the shrimp steamed not fried.
