In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share the most common marathon training mistake and how to deal with it. The most common mistake when training for a marathon or half marathon is to not go for a long run each week? Remember, it usually takes 3 to 4 months to train for a marathon or other long endurance race. You need to experience what it feels like to be running for a long period of time – it’s going to take 2-4 hours to run the race. That is a long time to be alone with yourself without talking. You also have to acclimate yourself to the weather and the time of day you’ll be running. The best way to do those long runs are to have someone drop you off 15-20 miles away from you house and run home rather than run a loop that starts from your house then gets you home again. And do these long runs at the same time of day the race will be held if you can. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Runners please stretch more – and start your urn slowly rather than full speed – you get the best stretch if your muscles are warm up a little before you stretch. Do some balance training – try the wobble board, or balance on one leg, then switch. there are lots of balance exercises that are easy and to do that will help strengthen your legs. Try exercising with those foam rollers. And if you are going to use anti-inflammatories – try the natural ones like pineapple and ginger before you go the over-the-counter NSAID route. Recently the American Academy of Pediatrics has announced that the risk outweighs the health benefits and parents should not get their son circumcised. She explains that the missing ingredient to your fitness or weight loss program is your brain. You have to change how you think in order to lose weight and maintain the weight loss. Some great tips were: write a list of the pro’s and con’s of exercising vs not exercising; be mindful with your eating; don’t take an all or nothing approach – 5 minutes of exercise is better than no minutes plus the minutes add up over the course of the day. Your goal is to make exercise a daily habit like brushing your teeth – something you do without thinking that is integrated into your life.
