On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Patrick Turpin with one of Dr Fitness’s favorite healthy snacks PopChips. PopChips are never fried never baked only popped. PopChips come in your favorite flavors like: BBQ, Original, Salt & Vinegar and Sea Salt. Their two new flavors are Sour Cream & Onion and Cheddar. They are an all natural line of potato chips that have about one third the fat and half the calories of regular potato chips. No wonder Dr Fitness puts them on the top of his favorite Chip List. Mens Health and Womens Health Magazines also named PopChips their favorite healthy snack as well. To learn more about where to find them please go to their website www.popchips.com

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how skinny friends can make you gain weight. Studies show that when you are eating with skinny people you use them as a guide as to what and how much to eat. So if your skinny friend is binging on chocolate cake you start thinking well if she can eat that then there is no harm in me having a piece as well. So you see your skinny friend (she’s not doing this to sabotage you on purpose) is undermining your weight loss program. Good news though, when you hang out with fatter people they also influence your behavior. When you see what heavier friends are eating typically you eat less because subconsciously you don’t want to look like them. So the bottom line is when you are trying to lose weight hang out with more fat people.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on one of Dr Fitness’ favorite authors. Dr. David Kessler. He is the former Commissioner of the FDA (the same guy who changed food labels and took on the tobacco industry)  and author of the bestselling book The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite. This book will change the way you look at food. In the book Dr Kessler cracks the code to why you overeat. He explains that the food industry has literally made it a science to figure out exactly what makes food so delicious and addicting. He calls these foods hyper palatable. These hyper-palatable foods have been engineered in food labs to actually change your brain chemistry so that you crave and want to eat more. Restaurants and food manufacturers combine fat, sugar and salt in cleverly delicious ways to make you want it more and more. They have come up with foods that have never existed before and that humans desire with such demand that many of these companies are multi-billion dollar money machines. Dr Kessler explains why you overeat and gives you some ways to stop. And stopping is not as simple as trying harder and having willpower because these foods change your brain chemistry much like drugs or nicotine does. In order to stop you have to treat your favorite trigger foods much like an alcoholic treats liquor. You have to avoid it and avoid the places it is served. And you can’t connect the food with emotional memories. Try to reward yourself and celebrate in other ways rather than eating and going out to restaurants.  To learn more please go to his website www.theendofovereatingbook.com

If you want all the benefits of jumping rope but are too uncoordinated to do it properly (like the Fat Guy) you have to check this product out. Jump Snap is a ropeless jump rope. It has handles with a short rope and ball attached. You hold the handles and go through the motions of jumping rope. But there is no actual rope the Jump Snap has a speaker that makes the sound of the rope swinging and it keeps track of calories burned, how many repetitions you done and it even talks to you. How cool is that? Please go to Brad’s website www.jumpsnap.com and check it out. How bad can it be Hilary Swank uses it and she’s pretty hot, right?

We also had on Raymond Francis author of “Never Be Sick Again” and his brand new book “Never Be Fat Again”. Raymond had a spirited discussion about the steps needed to lose weight and keep it off permanently. He was very passionate and almost convinced the Fat Guy that he should lay off processed food. Dr Fitness loved his message and strongly suggested checking out his books. Raymond also does a lot of work trying to help children and the alarming childhood obesity and health crisis in this country. Please go to Raymond’s website www.beyondhealth.com  for great information including a couple of real powerful free reports called “The Roadmap to Ultimate Health” and “The Roadmap to Supplements” And for more information about his non-profit group that helps children learn the basics of good health please go to www.healtheamerica.org

The Doctor had some fitness tips in his latest installment of …Dr Fitness’ “Things You Can Do Today” To Get Ready For Your First Spinning Class Tomorrow. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness’ secrets about the things you should do to see if spinning is for you. Number 1, check out the spinning class before you start – make sure you like the instructor – in group exercise classes the instructor is critical. Number 2, check out the equipment – make sure your gym has good solid equipment – you don’t want the bike to be falling apart mid-ride. And Number 3, when you get on the bike make sure you have the seat at the right height – a good spin instructor will come over to make sure you are on right. He had a few more tips but since I’ve never been anywhere near a spinning class I kind of lost interest but you’ll have to listen to get them.

Kathie Larkin was in the house and she was fired up about landing a big part in a movie that is being filmed here in Atlanta. She told us all about it. You know Kathie as the host of Real Savvy Moms.  Real Savvy Moms is a great show for moms that is available on most Public Broadcasting Stations around the US and online. Remember Kathie is one of the top feet and legs model’s out there… she is so hot she got to be a body double for Alyssa Milano a few weeks ago. Be sure to check out Kathie’s website www.getkathie.com. Also check out her hosting skills on www.RealSavvyMoms.com.

Remember we are now on Michigan radio station WKNW this day. They asked us to create a Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy “Wellness Minute.” So now a new Wellness Minute runs on that station each day. Each Wellness Minute features the doctor and I going over 5 of his best tips on a given wellness subject like: losing weight, getting in shape, living a healthy lifestyle, etc. We’re working on ways to make those tips available to all our listeners. If you have a favorite radio station that you think would benefit from our Wellness Minutes send them an email telling them about it and who knows maybe you can hear us everyday too.

Also once again, I need you to please do me a favor. My nine year kid Max made his radio debut in his new show “Kid Power Radio.” This is a great show for your kids. It is kind of like a kids version of David Spade’s “Showbiz Show” on Comedy Central or Entertainment Tonight. Max recaps the week in entertainment and gives his take and review of what he liked and didn’t like on TV, at the movies, video games, in books and in music and even restaurant reviews. Please go to his site and download the show for your kid. And if your kid sends Max an email he’ll read it on the air next week. The show can be found at www.kidpowerradio.com and you can email Max at RadioStarMax at Yahoo.com. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Which Is The Fattest And Fittest State In The Union?

by Dr.Fitness on September 8, 2006

Mississippi is the fattest state and Colorado is the fittest according to a study done by CalorieLab. Maybe I can turn the tide in Alabama which was not far behind in Fattest State Competition

CalorieLab has just released a list of the fattest states in the country for 2006. Their research reveals that Mississippi is the fattest state, where approximately 29.5% of the population is obese based on a three year statistical average. If the statistics are extended to include the overweight population, as well as those who are obese, the results show that over 2/3 (67.3%) of the state’s residents are either overweight or obese; Mississippi is the only state to have that dubious honor. Following close behind in the obesity count are Alabama, West Virginia, Louisiana and Kentucky. Colorado is the leanest state, followed in no particular order by Hawaii, Montana and a handful of the New England states.

The data was gathered from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System database from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which reveals some very interesting information about some of the factors that contribute to obesity, such as diet, nutrition and physical activity levels. For example, only 16% of adults in Mississippi eat the recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, compared to 29% in California and 30% in Vermont.
