On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Kathy Smith. Kathy has been a leading force in the wellness industry since 1980. She has sold over 16 million exercise videos and was recently inducted into the Video Hall of Fame. She serves on the board of the USC School of Gerontology and the Women’s Sports Foundation. How to Prevent Holiday Weight Gain

Holiday travel and parties make it a tough time to lose weight – so modify your goal just to stay at the same weight during the holidays. When you travel by car be sure to prepare and bring healthy snacks with you in a cooler. Cut up veggies or make healthy sandwiches instead of driving through fast food restaurants. If you are going to the airport try and eat a healthy meal before you get there instead of eating an unhealthy meal at the terminal. And on the flight bring your own healthy snack instead of relying on whatever the airline is handing out. Grocery Store Chicken Safety Tips

Consumer Reports recently said that 2 out 3 chickens they tested were contaminated with some bacteria. They said even organic chickens were contaminated but at a lesser rate. So when you are buying a chicken at the store make sure you put it immediately into one of those plastic bags to prevent any bacteria from moving from the chicken onto any of your other food items, especially unbagged veggies and fruits. Also make sure the bag your chicken is in is sealed properly . Strong Bones Diet

Building strong bones is important if you want to avoid getting osteoporosis.  A recent study found that in Asian countries they don’t consume the amount of dairy we consume here yet they have a low incidence of osteoporosis. The Asian diet consists of low acid foods like fruits and vegetables that help the body consume the calcium they get through the foods they eat. The thinking is that because we consume so much acidic animal protein here we are having a difficult time absorbing the calcium and that is why we suffer from osteoporosis at greater rates.
