On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Christopher McDougall, former war correspondent and now contributing editor for Men’s Health and author of the NY Times Bestseller Born to Run. A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, And the Greatest Race The World Has Never Seen. Christopher shared his thoughts on the benefits of running barefoot. After suffering from several running related injuries Christopher began researching why an Indian tribespeople in Mexico can run for miles barefoot or in thin soled sandals and they weren’t suffering from the injuries that people in the US suffer from. Just as running was a way of life for these people, Chris found that being sedentary is a way of life for most Americans these days. Christopher determined that running shoes were the problem and he began running barefoot. He found no evidence that running shoes actually prevent injuries. A short time later his injuries went away and he began enjoying long runs again. He has found running barefoot helps him concentrate more on each step and that may help prevent injuries and help him run faster. He recommended the website www.runningbarefoot.org for more information about barefoot running. His book is more about this Indian tribe and his adventures with them. This is where he learned barefoot running and actually saw and took part in an amazing 50+ mile race amongst the tribes. It is Dr Fitness approved you should definitely check it out. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on an inspirational story from breast cancer survivor and author Lauren Miller. Lauren was diagnosed with Stage three breast cancer at age 38. A diagnosis that came just five days after her divorce became final. She was given a 50-50 chance of survival. As a mother of three children Lauren wrote of her spiritual journey in Hearing His Whisper. Lauren’s mantra “I Choose Life” helped her get through this harrowing ordeal. She has also used her battle with cancer not to feel like a victim but to empower her to live life in the moment. She actually said that cancer was a gift. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with award winning science journalist Gary Taubes, author of the controversial book Good Calories, Bad Calories. Fats, Carbs and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health. He believes that the fewer refined carbohydrates we eat, the leaner we will be because carbs increase insulin levels which causes obesity, increases your hunger and decreases your metabolic efficiency. Not only that but he says that refined carbohydrates, starches and sugars are the most likely dietary causes of Alzheimer’s, cancer and other diseases. He says exercise does not make us lose excess fat – it just makes us hungry. And obesity is the result of excess fat accumulation not overeating and not a sedentary lifestyle. So according to Gary eat all the protein you want, he says their is no upper limit on your protein consumption – just avoid the carbs and you’ll lose weight and also be healthier. Put down the broccoli and pick up the pork rinds! I watched such a great soccer game yesterday. It was the finals of the Gold Cup and the U.S. Defeated Mexico 2-1. But the real story was last Thursday when we had Hottie Kickboxing Champ, Fitz, Dr. Mark Hyman, author of “UltraMetabolism,” and his latest project, The Ultrasimple Diet. Our buddy, Dr. Monte Ladner also dropped by and we talked about his latest project, an audio book, and his great show www.fitnessrocks.org

Leading off the show, we had the fitness expert behind the great style=”font-weight:bold;”>AOL blog That’sFit the queen of Fitzness that’s right it’s not a typo Fitzness. Fitz is not just a fitness expert! She has all big league credentials like her Masters degree in Exercise Science from the Fat Guy’s alma mater University of Florida, Go Gators. She is a true action hero. She has acted and worked as a stunt women. Now she is a kickboxing guru. She is the Director of the International Sport Kickboxing Association’s Fitness Division. She was kind enough to take a break from her heavy bag and spend some time with us. Fitz shared a lot about herself and how she transformed herself from the young girl who was always riding the bench to the feared kickboxing professional who likes to mix it up in the ring. Her story is a great example of a person who may not have had the natural ability but she was willing to work hard and put in the time and effort to maximize her talents. The Doctor had some his latest installment of …Dr Fitness’ “Things You Can Do Today” To Get Rid of Your Bad Breath Tomorrow. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness’ secrets about how to eliminate bad breath. Number 1, eat more citrus – it seems that the acid from Vitamin C helps get rid of bad breath – so eat a fruit. Number 2, enjoy some yogurt – it’s got to be active culture though – sedentary culture just doesn’t cut it. And Number 3, produce more saliva in your mouth by sucking on hard candy or a mint like say an Altoid. this seems like cheating but he said it. He had a few more tips but you’ll have to listen to get them.

The Doctor had some his latest installment of …Dr Fitness’ “Things You Can Do Today” To Lose Weight Tomorrow. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness’ secrets about how to watch out for seemingly healthy choices that pack a lot of calories at some of your favorite restaurants. Number 1, Ruby Tuesday’s Veggie Burger has over 900 calories, bet you didn’t know that. Number 2, Chili’s grilled salmon meal gives you 8 oz of salmon some rice and veggies for about 700 calories – probably more than you thought but it sounds good to the Fat Guy. And Number 3, beware the Macha Green Tea Blast at Jamba Juice…that 32 ounce smoothie will cost you well over 600 calories. For that amount of calories I’d much rather have the salmon from Chili’s. He had a few more tips but you’ll have to listen to get them.

Number 2, eat less saturated fats – that means less red meat. And Number 3, Eat more pineapple. Pineapple contains bromelain and that has been proven to lower inflammation. The most entertaining weight loss and fitness podcast show on radio.” Please click on the POD button to listen to the latest Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy radio show podcast.  On tonight’s show, Doctor Fitness and the Fat Guy get the skinny about the Dr Gerald Musante’s World Renowned Weight Loss Clinic and book called “Structure House” The Structure House Weight Loss Plan is rocketing up the best seller lists because it is less a diet and more about strategies and tools you can use to permanently change your poor eating behaviors and your relationship with food. Dr Musante spent a lot of time patiently explaining to the fat guy tips and techniques he could use to lose weight.  A great weight loss tip from Dr Musante was to eat only three meals a day. During the interview everyone agreed that the best chance for the fat guy to lose weight and keep it off would be through an intervention at the Structure House in Durham, North Carolina. We also got to spend time with Wade Meredith, the brains behind Healthbolt. Healthbolt is a fun and informative blog about all things health related. Wade is not a real doctor like Dr Fitness but he is a pretty sharp guy with a passion for health. His blog delves into topics like “What happens to your body if you drink a Coke right now” or “If you stop smoking right now” He also has  a bunch of health tips that are so easy the fat guy could do most of them. Lisa Cohen also joined us to share her experience with bariatric surgery. Now we have had bariatric surgeons on the show before but Lisa was the first bariatric survivor to join us. She has lost 75 pounds and kept it off for almost 2 years now. The surgery worked great for her and she has not had any setbacks. If you are considering bariatric surgery – Lisa did the lap band you have to listen to hear all about her experience. This surgery set her back a lot of money that she had to pay for out of pocket – but she does share a way that her mother got the surgery done for almost nothing. The Doctor had to bring some great health tips on ways to protect yourself from the sun this summer. So we had a new installment of …Dr Fitness’ “Things You Can Do Today” To Not Get Sunburned Tomorrow. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness’ secrets about how to avoid a bad sunburn…Number 1, use lots of sunscreen a minimum of spf 30. Put on more than you think you need and reapply if you go in the water. Number 2, if you have fair skin wear a big brimmed hat and sunglasses. And Number 3, stay out of the sun during peak times of 10am and 2pm. He had a few more tips but you’ll have to listen to get them.

This is the first time since we started doing the show that both guests didn’t call in. That’s not good. So tonight the doctor and me just chatted about all things fitness. So if you tune in for me and the doctor bantering you are in for a treat.

The Doctor had to bring some great workout tips because we didn’t have any guests to carry the show like usual. So we had another installment of …Dr Fitness’ “Things You Can Do Today” To Lose Weight Tomorrow. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness’ secrets about how to make sure you are losing weight even if you do some traveling at hotels…Number 1, before you book the hotel make sure they have some workout equipment or pool. Number 2, avoid the vending machines. Bring in healthy snacks from nearby grocery stores. And Number 3, explore the city – go for a walk or a run.

The Doctor had to bring a double dose of tips. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness’ secrets about how to sleep well each and every night…Number 1, don’t eat right before bedtime. Number 2, take a hot bath or shower right before going to bed. And Number 3, make the bedroom a sanctuary – no TV,  no computer – just a place to rest and relax.
