In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some ways to burn some Thanksgiving Day calories. Start the morning off speed cleaning your home. Cleaning your house at a fast pace with holiday music blaring is a great way to burn lots of calories and get a clean home. Volunteer to feed the homeless. Putting food on plates doesn’t seem like it burns a lot of calories but feeding the homeless requires a lot more than that. Someone has to lift the boxes of food and move them to the tables – it might as well be you. Run a charity road race before the big meal. And if all else fails play a big family football game after you eat. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. This Is Your Brain on Artificial Sweeteners

by FatGuy on November 13, 2009

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain the effect artificial sweeteners have on the brain. While we are not getting into the dangers of aspartame stuff here, we would like to address the studies that talk about how your brain gets confused when it tastes something sweet but does not get the calories it is anticipating from that sweet taste. Real and artificial sweeteners effect the pleasure centers in your brain – don’t think their is much debate about that. When you consume real sugar your brain says in a Homer Simpson like way “mmmm sweets” and starts to feel full because of all the calories that are coming along with that deliciously sweet taste. But when you consume artificial sweeteners your brain starts thinking “mmmmm sweets” but then it doesn’t feel full because their are no calories consumed with that taste of sweetness. This confuses your brain. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had our good friend LA Justice, author A Slimmer You come on for some weight loss tips to help you get through the holidays. She says Fat Season is coming and you have to have a plan to get through it at the same weight as you entered.  Here come all those holiday parties and the key to surviving them is to eat first before you get there – do not go to a party hungry. And then when you are at the party just take a taste. Instead of a whole dessert – just take a bite. Remember your stomach is normally the size of a one liter bottle but it can stretch to the size of a gallon milk jug. Don’t test its limits. Avoid those cheese cubes and desserts – you can consume close to 1000 calories in a blink eating those foods. Remember just because food is free doesn’t mean you have eat everything – you are not a bear getting ready to hibernate for the Winter. To learn more about LA and check out all her books please go to her website www.smartbooksusa.com

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain why putting calories on restaurant menus will help you lose weight. Despite recent research to the contrary (probably funded by the restaurant industry) we think that listing the number of calories in restaurant meals will help you lose weight. Being aware and mindful of the number of calories you are about to consume will affect your behavior. The more information the consumer has the better. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Great post on Freakonomics blog in New York Times about how little nudges like calorie count labels on restaurant menus,  signs telling you how many calories you’ll burn walking from the last parking spot in a mall shopping center even stairs that play musical notes as you walk up and down them encourage healthy living.

Here’s the post – check out the photo’s by clicking on the link…

We blogged about musical stairs in Stockholm that try to encourage stair-climbing rather than escalator-riding. One of the issues with this “nudge,” as Dubner wrote, is that it’s probably more fun for people to descend them than to ascend.

These stairs in Lisbon, however, address that problem by appealing to the calorie conscious.

Easy Ways To Burn Extra Calories

by FatGuy on September 21, 2009

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share how to burn more calories each day. Here are some easy ways to burn extra calories each day. Park far away. My dream is that mall or grocery store park lots will have signs posted at throughout the lot tell you how many calories you’re burning if you walk to the entrance from that point. Kind of like those signs at amusement parks that tell you how long your wait is from that point. Going for a walk at lunch will burn extra calories. At home set a timer and speed clean your house – you get a double bonus a cleaner house and a quick cardio fitness workout. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
