Dr. Fitness Says No To “Alli”

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

This week GlaxoSmithKline will release Alli, the first FDA-approved diet drug cleared for over-the-counter sale. The company is expected to spend $150 million on marketing the drug in its first year. Television and magazine ads are already running. E-tailers Amazon.com and Drugstore.com report the drug, which has been pre-sold, already is a top seller - at a cost of $50 - $60 per month.

Here’s the catch people…THE SIDE EFFECTS, which can include oily discharge, diarrhea and uncontrollable bowel movements significant enough for the company to recommend carrying an extra pair of pants until users have acclimated to the drug. Huh? The drug company is recommending an extra set of trouser? How bout throwing a couple of pair with the drug!!!! I think this is insane!!! The side effects alone can force users to eat less. Alli blocks enzymes that digest fat, preventing the body from absorbing about a quarter of the fat eaten. Because Alli can interfere with vitamin absorption, it can affect how medications act in the body, and users are advised to take a multivitamin supplement. Now that’s a relief, a drug company telling us to use a Multi! The drug is not recommended for children younger than 18, people with kidney disease, patients on blood-thinners and certain other medications, and pregnant or breast-feeding women. Dr. Fitness Gives it a big Thumbs Down and knowing my buddy The Fat Guy, he’s probably already at Walgreens buying all the “Alli.”

He recently completed “The Celebrity Fit Club Bootcamp Workout” dvd and his book “Harvey’s No Excuses Workout” will be out in August. Sgt Harvey believes in tough love and doesn’t take kindly to excuses. So if you want some of his best tips and a little behind the scenes gossip from one of TV’s best personal trainers you’re going to love tonight’s show.

Check out First Sgt Harvey Walden’s website www.harveywalden.com for more info.

We also got to spend time with Tanya Shorrock, Diet Nutritionist for Diet Classics. If you have listened to Dr Fitness for any length of time you know that he is dead set against any diet pill. So interviewing Tanya was pretty intense. She held her own with the Fat Guy and there were plenty of laughs. Her feelings are if you are going to spend money for diet pills at least Diet Classics pills are half the price of the name brand ones. Tanya is a nutritionist and a personal trainer in California and she herself doesn’t use these pills and all she is trying to do is to give some good information to those people out there who are going to try diet pills anyway. She knows that the only way to lose weight is through eating right and exercising.

The Doctor had to bring some great workout tips because of the quality of the guests we had on and he did. So we had another installment of …Dr Fitness’ “Things You Can Do Today” To Lose Weight Tomorrow. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness’ secrets about how to make sure you are doing a well balanced workout when you strength train…Number 1, always do a full body workout. Don’t do arms one day and legs another day. Number 2, only do 8-12 exercises when you workout at the gym. And Number 3, don’t spend too much time on one body part, especially your core. Those one hour abs classes are a waste of time and you can get hurt.

Kathie was in Michigan doing something for the Real Savvy Moms TV show but she did give away some of our books which made the doctor happy. She’ll be away for the next couple of weeks as she films her Real Savvy Moms show in hot spots around the world. Remember she is one of the top feet and legs model’s out there… she is so hot she got to be a body double for Alyssa Milano a few weeks ago. Be sure to check out Kathie’s website www.getkathie.com. Also check her out on www.RealSavvyMoms.com.

We also made our Michigan radio debut on WKNW this week. They asked us to create a Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy “Wellness Minute.” So now a new Wellness Minute runs on that station each day. Each Wellness Minute features the doctor and I going over 5 of his best tips on a given wellness subject like: losing weight, getting in shape, living a healthy lifestyle, etc. We’re working on ways to make those tips available to all our listeners. So let us know what you think by sending us an email with Wellness Minute in the subject line.

Also once again, I need you to please do me a favor. My nine year kid Max made his radio debut in his new show “Kid Power Radio.” This is a great show for your kids. It is kind of like a kids version of David Spade’s “Showbiz Show” on Comedy Central. Max recaps the week in entertainment and gives his take and review of what he liked and didn’t like on TV, at the movies in books and in music. Please go to his site and download the show for your kid. And if your kid sends Max an email he’ll read it on the air next week. The show can be found at www.kidpower.libsyn.com and you can email Max at RadioStarMax at Yahoo.com. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Diet Pills, Diet Patches & Diet Potions. Dr. Fitness Separates Fact From Fiction!

Monday, January 9th, 2006

Another hilariously informative Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy show, the funniest weight loss and fitness radio show on the internet. This week Doctor Fitness gives you the skinny on separating fact from fiction when it comes to magic diet pills, diet potions and diet patches. Here’s the Doctor’s 8 tips to avoid being ripped off by these so called magic diet pills. #8. Google search the ingredients back to reputable sites like www.fda.gov or www.webmd.com. #7. Remember that people get paid to endorse products. And doctors are people too. #6. Make sure the group that is doing the so called unbiased study has no monetary affiliation with the product. #5. Everyone wants to believe their is some magic to help them lose weight and these unscrupulous marketers exploit that. #4. Don’t settle for anecdotal evidence as validation these pills actually work. #3. Look for double blind studies that last for years not 4-8 weeks. Also make sure those labs are independent. #2. Read the labels carefully. Don’t get distracted by inferred endorsements, slick doctor quotes or phony before and after pictures. #1. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true. It probably is.

Here’s a quote by yogamaster BKS Iyengar that sums up my position on this craziness. “Physical health is not a commodity to be bargained for. It cannot be swallowed in the form of drugs or pills. It has to be earned through sweat.”

The 4 Most Common Weight Loss Methods. Too Bad None Of Them Work. The Doctor Tells You What Works If Weight Loss Is Your Resolution This New Year!

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

Everyone who listens knows that Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy is the funniest weight loss and fitness radio show on the internet.

This week the Doctor gives you the skinny on the 4 most common weight loss methods and why they don’t works and what you should do instead.

Here are his tips.

#4. If you’re thinking about joining a gym and you’ve never done it before then you’ll have better results if you find a partner to help you lose weight instead. #3. Before you spend thousands of dollars on a treadmill or another large piece of exercise equipment spend fifty bucks on a heart rate monitor which will help you a lot more. #2. Don’t add another diet book to your diet book collection just eat smaller portions 25% less per meal should do it. #1. I know you’re tempted to try those diet pills, the commercials are very persuasive. Don’t do it. diet pills don’t address the behaviors that cuased you to put on the weight in the first place. Try to modify one behavior that’s causing you to put on weight instead!

Check out our podcast of our radio show here. In additon to the tips, you’ll hear a hilarious interview with Stephanie Triplett of the Mommy Chronicles radio show and book. She is awesome and her book and radio show are awesome. If you are a mom click here to learn more about the Mommy Chronicles.
