On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Leslie Bonci, sports Dietitian for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Pirates. She is also the author of the new book Sports Nutrition for Coaches. On the show she shared some great nutrition tips for athletes and their trainers. Some of the common mistakes she said that trainers make with their athletes are not giving them enough information regarding how food and fluids can improve their performance. She says that since different sports have different metabolic demands that each athletes food and fluid requirements are different – so it is important to eat and drink for your needs. She also said that their is too much emphasis on protein consumption and not enough on eating carbohydrates. She isn’t a big fan of not eating before workouts then drinking protein shakes afterward. She says trainers also have to be aware of eating disorders in athletes especially those in weight class sports like wrestling and gymnastics. She says planning meals before working out is critical.  To learn more about Leslie and her book please go to www.sportsmedicine.upmc.com

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had our good friend LA Justice, author A Slimmer You come on for some weight loss tips to help you get through the holidays. She says Fat Season is coming and you have to have a plan to get through it at the same weight as you entered.  Here come all those holiday parties and the key to surviving them is to eat first before you get there – do not go to a party hungry. And then when you are at the party just take a taste. Instead of a whole dessert – just take a bite. Remember your stomach is normally the size of a one liter bottle but it can stretch to the size of a gallon milk jug. Don’t test its limits. Avoid those cheese cubes and desserts – you can consume close to 1000 calories in a blink eating those foods. Remember just because food is free doesn’t mean you have eat everything – you are not a bear getting ready to hibernate for the Winter. To learn more about LA and check out all her books please go to her website www.smartbooksusa.com

Randy Karp Says You’re Misinformed About Food

by FatGuy on October 27, 2009

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on nutrition and human behavior expert Randy Karp joined us. He talked all about how we are totally misinformed about food. For example he says cooking with unstable vegetable oils is bad for you. Instead cook in high heat with extra virgin coconut oil. And be careful with your olive oil. Most olive oils are devoid of health benefits, especially when heated. When asked if he could only eat one food he said it would be avocado.  Regarding fish he said that the pro’s of eating fish are that they eat algae which is good for you but the cons are that they also live in water that has toxins. So choose your fish wisely. On his website he has lots of information about healthy eating and healthy foods. He produces his own line of extra virgin olive oil which he makes in very small quantities to ensure quality. And a new product called Just Like Sugar that has only 1 calorie in 5 lbs. You can learn more about his views in his book Misinformed About Food or on his website www.rkinformedliving.com

icon for podpress  wellness minutes skinny friends make you fat: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how skinny friends can make you gain weight. Studies show that when you are eating with skinny people you use them as a guide as to what and how much to eat. So if your skinny friend is binging on chocolate cake you start thinking well if she can eat that then there is no harm in me having a piece as well. So you see your skinny friend (she’s not doing this to sabotage you on purpose) is undermining your weight loss program. Good news though, when you hang out with fatter people they also influence your behavior. When you see what heavier friends are eating typically you eat less because subconsciously you don’t want to look like them. So the bottom line is when you are trying to lose weight hang out with more fat people.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. “Dr. Fitness, Please Help”

by Dr.Fitness on June 11, 2006

“Dr. Fitness, I’m stuck in a rut, please help,” was the subject headline to a recent email I received from a female and that’s all I am going to say to describe her. She had recently lost 40 pounds from her 1st pregnancy by good-old fashion sweat and exercise….and by exercise, I mean exercise. An hour and a half of walking outside in the morning followed by and hour and a half of treadmill walking at night. Three hours of exercise and she lost 40 lbs. 10 less pounds prior to her being pregnant. Her reason for contacting me was that now she was going back to work and those three convenient hours of exercise would not be so available and she was slowly starting to gain weight….and she was terrified! What should she do?

When I emailed her back for her to describe her eating habits, she told me she ate whatever she wanted and would rather exercise than feel deprived of her favorite foods. This is where her story became very common and one where most people fail to succeed. I call it “The All Or Nothing Principle.” This means that whatever I am doing, in her case exercising 3 hours per day and eating whatever I want, I will be successful following these parameters. But if you change the parameters (Can’t exercise for 3 hours), I will give up on the entire process because I know I will eventually gain the weight back since I can’t be deprived.

I explained to her that she didn’t need to exercise 3 hours/day to maintain her body weight. She did need to examine her diet to figure out what were her caloric needs, how to manage portions of her favorite things to not feel deprived, and being diligent about identifying caloric content. She was so convinced that she would have to give up her favorite things and she also felt like a slave to exercise. I told her how to break the “All Or Nothing Principle” and if you are in a similar situation, here’s how you can break this very difficult pattern!
1. Take advantage of even the smallest amount of free time to exercise. If you like getting an hour of exercise but you have a very busy schedule, look for 15 – 20 windows of free time to do something.

2. Keep your exercise clothes and shoes close by. If some free time opens up, buy an extra pair of exercise shoes or clothes convenient for a quick workout.

3. Pay attention to every meal and avoid mindless eating. Most people eat under stress and you can add tons of calories by not paying attention. So pay attention especially at work!!

4. Avoid big gaps of time without eating. This happens to many of us, especially at work. We go the whole day without eating and as a reward for eating, we feel we can eat everything thus causing overindulging and over-consumption. Stay aware and you’ll stay trim
