On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Christopher McDougall, former war correspondent and now contributing editor for Men’s Health and author of the NY Times Bestseller Born to Run. A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, And the Greatest Race The World Has Never Seen. Christopher shared his thoughts on the benefits of running barefoot. After suffering from several running related injuries Christopher began researching why an Indian tribespeople in Mexico can run for miles barefoot or in thin soled sandals and they weren’t suffering from the injuries that people in the US suffer from. Just as running was a way of life for these people, Chris found that being sedentary is a way of life for most Americans these days. Christopher determined that running shoes were the problem and he began running barefoot. He found no evidence that running shoes actually prevent injuries. A short time later his injuries went away and he began enjoying long runs again. He has found running barefoot helps him concentrate more on each step and that may help prevent injuries and help him run faster. He recommended the website www.runningbarefoot.org for more information about barefoot running. His book is more about this Indian tribe and his adventures with them. This is where he learned barefoot running and actually saw and took part in an amazing 50+ mile race amongst the tribes. It is Dr Fitness approved you should definitely check it out. It gives runners and aspiring runners something to think about. You can find this awesome book at Amazon and in bookstores everywhere.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Leslie Bonci, sports Dietitian for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Pirates. She is also the author of the new book Sports Nutrition for Coaches. On the show
she shared some great nutrition tips for athletes and their trainers. Some of the common mistakes she said that trainers make with their athletes are not giving them enough information regarding how food and fluids can improve their performance. She says that since different sports have different metabolic demands that each athletes food and fluid requirements are different – so it is important to eat and drink for your needs. She also said that their is too much emphasis on protein consumption and not enough on eating carbohydrates. She isn’t a big fan of not eating before workouts then drinking protein shakes afterward. She says trainers also have to be aware of eating disorders in athletes especially those in weight class sports like wrestling and gymnastics. She says planning meals before working out is critical. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on nutrition and human behavior expert Randy Karp joined us. He
talked all about how we are totally misinformed about food. For example he says cooking with unstable vegetable oils is bad for you. Instead cook in high heat with extra virgin coconut oil. And be careful with your olive oil. Most olive oils are devoid of health benefits, especially when heated. When asked if he could only eat one food he said it would be avocado. Regarding fish he said that the pro’s of eating fish are that they eat algae which is good for you but the cons are that they also live in water that has toxins. So choose your fish wisely. On his website he has lots of information about healthy eating and healthy foods. He produces his own line of extra virgin olive oil which he makes in very small quantities to ensure quality. And a new product called Just Like Sugar that has only 1 calorie in 5 lbs. You can learn more about his views in his book Misinformed About Food or on his website www.rkinformedliving.com
