Next we had on Tina Vindum, outdoor fitness expert and host of the radio show Outdoor Fitness on the Lime channel 114 on Sirius Satellite Radio. Tina talked about the importance of training outdoors in order to get one with nature and use the surroundings around you to get a wickedly effective workout. In San Francisco she does outdoor classes with her clients first thing in the morning. They might be doing pull ups on a tree branch one minute and stretching on a parking meter the next. Each workout is different and each is sure to kick your butt. Tina stressed that exercising outdoors is an almost spiritual experience. She says she has had clients get overcome with emotions as they workout. Picture yourself at the crack of dawn, surrounded by the glow of the rising sun, running through the woods with the skyline of San Francisco in front of you as sweat is pouring off your body. Flu Shot? Fat Guy Says No But Uses A Lot Of Purell

I am not a big fan of shots in general and have never had a flu shot. I don’t get sick a lot and neither does my wife or kid. Recently at my kid’s 10 year check up the Doctor was about to give my kid the flu shot when I stopped him. The guy looked at me like I was crazy for not “protecting” my kid from a flu that he might not even get in the first place. I am all for preventative behaviors. Being the Fat Guy, means I don’t always take these preventive measures. But I don’t think it’s a good idea to over medicate oneself unless we’re talking about a sugar-induced coma. So we passed on the flu shot but are going through a bottle of Purell about every other day.

Here is a recent article from the NY Times that says preschoolers and/or kids in day care in New Jersey are required to get an annual flu shot… What do you think?

Despite opposition from numerous parents and children’s rights advocates, a public health advisory panel voted on Monday to require all children in New Jersey who attend preschool or are in day care to get annual flu vaccinations . The measure, expected to be approved by the state health commissioner in the next week, will make New Jersey the first state in the country to mandate such immunizations

The Fat Guy Loves His Tavalon Green Tea

Man, one of the perks of this radio show is that people send us stuff to try. And our friends at Holey Donuts have a buddy at Tavalon Tea and they sent me a care package with lots of goodies. In addition to a whole variety of delicious fresh loose leaf teas including my fave the lemongrass green tea they sent a gravity teapot steeping machine. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John-Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham made a triumphant return last night. Robert Plant’s torso is no longer exposed but I heard he sounded brilliant!!! I think the Fat Guy was a big Led Zep fan back in the day but it is very hard for him to remember anything form the late 70’s and early 80’s. Even though he can’t remember that far back he did find this great product called “Forkchops,” a combination of chopsticks and a fork, a perfect holiday gift…..for me to give him!!!!! As usual, Susi had lots of great diet and health tips. first she informed the Fat Guy which restaurants to avoid in the food court and which fast food places are safe to indulge in. She said to avoid the cinnamon rolls and and the fried foods. She says she even brings healthy snacks with her when she goes to the mall. Then she and Dr Fitness got into a spirited game of who knows more compound exercises. They both agreed that compound exercises (lunges, squats, etc.) are the way to go for faster, more effective workouts. Next we had a return engagement with Vicky Sorenson, the creator of the Fitness Challenge. The Fitness Challenge is a great game where you make a fitness wager with someone for 8 weeks. The game allows you to easily keep track of your progress and the winner not only gets into better shape and drops a few pounds but they might also get an ipod or some other great prize. You see you make a wager with your competition (it could be your spouse, your child or even a friend who lives in another state) to make it a little more interesting. Remember we are now on every morning in Michigan. On radio station WKNW. They asked us to create a Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy “Wellness Minute.” So now a new Wellness Minute runs on that station each morning at around 7:40. Each Wellness Minute features the doctor and I going over 5 of his best tips on a given wellness subject like: losing weight, getting in shape, living a healthy lifestyle, etc. We’re working on ways to make those tips available to all our listeners. If you have a favorite radio station that you think would benefit from our Wellness Minutes send them an email telling them about it and who knows maybe you can hear us everyday too.

Also once again, I need you to please do me a favor. My kid Max has been doing a radio show called “Kid Power Radio” for awhile now and you should check it out. What is Amy Winehouse, Miley Cyrus,and Mike Golic Doing For Thanksgiving?

I have no idea!!!! but I hope Miley Cyrus keeps on singing since my soon-to-be stepdaughter, Rebecca, LOVES her. Former Pro Football Star Mike Golic is a great radio announcer and thanks for admitting to using steroids…10 years after you retired from football!!! I am sure you have helped many aspiring young lineman choose not to use steroids. It’s plain and simple… Steroids are for cheaters!!!! I hope Amy Winehouse stays away from drugs and just as important, cigarettes, since she has such an amazing voice….what a talent!!!

Here are some of my tips for those who are trying to help there close ones quit smoking:

1. help lighten their stress levels. help the quitter with a few chores like watching their kids, cooking — whatever will help of quitting

2.Don’t take the quitter’s grouchiness personally during his or her nicotine withdrawal. The symptoms usually dissipate in about 2 weeks.

3. Studies show that most people try to quit smoking 5 to 7 times before they succeed. If a relapse happens, think of it as being one step closer to succeeding and not failing!!!!

Remember we are now on every morning in Michigan. On radio station WKNW. They asked us to create a Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy “Wellness Minute.” So now a new Wellness Minute runs on that station each morning at around 7:40. Each Wellness Minute features the doctor and I going over 5 of his best tips on a given wellness subject like: losing weight, getting in shape, living a healthy lifestyle, etc. We’re working on ways to make those tips available to all our listeners. If you have a favorite radio station that you think would benefit from our Wellness Minutes send them an email telling them about it and who knows maybe you can hear us everyday too.

Also once again, I need you to please do me a favor. My kid Max has been doing a radio show called “Kid Power Radio” for awhile now and you should check it out. Tiffany from The Daily Candy called his family friendly radio show “Hilarious!” This is a great show for your kids. It is kind of like a kids version of David Spade’s “Showbiz Show” on Comedy Central or Entertainment Tonight mixed in with a little Wayne’s World. Max recaps the week in entertainment and gives his take and review of what he liked and didn’t like on TV, at the movies, video games, in books and in music and even restaurant reviews. Please go to his site and download the show for your kid. He had a big show recently he interviewed Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Brad and Angelina Never Struggle As Emotional Eaters Struggle Most At Dieting and Weightloss!

Get ready for this emotional eaters….like me…..when we eat feeling lonely or blue, tend to lose the least amount of weight and have the hardest time keeping it off. Doesn’t that stink! Heather Niemeier, an obesity researcher at The Miriam Hospital and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, said in a statement. “We found that the more people report eating in response to thoughts and feelings, the less weight they lost,”
The study included 286 overweight men and women who were participating in a behavioral weight loss program.

A second group consisted of more than 3,300 adults who have lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off for at least one year.Niemeier and her team analyzed responses to an eating inventory questionnaire.They focused on people who ate because of external influences, such as people who eat too much at parties, and people who ate because of internal influences, such as feeling lonely or as a reward.

What they found is that the more a person ate for internal reasons, the less weight they lost over time.”Our results suggest that we need to pay more attention to eating triggered by emotions or thoughts as they clearly play a significant role in weight loss,” Niemeier said.

So, what can you do if emotional eating is a problem?
Make a conscious effort to become more aware of how and why you may be using food or what is going on around you while you are eating. Develop new skills for mood regulation. If you need support to do so, find a professional. The focus should be on improving your emotional and physical well-being not just weight loss.
