On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Heather Harvey creator of the Measure Up Bowl. Heather shared her story about how she created this innovative weight loss product. She had gained some weight during her pregnancy that she was having trouble getting rid of. So a nutrition coach suggested she should measure and weight the foods that she ate. So Heather figured out a clever way to measure foods you put into bowls. And by the way, she lost about 80 pounds. The Measure Up bowl is one of those product that once you see it you think, why didn’t I think of that – it is so obvious. The Measure up Bowl has subtle lines telling you how much you are putting into each bowl in quarter and half cup increments. You will not find a better product to control your portion sizes. Especially with cereal. Heather did a great job with the design and quality. These bowls are dishwasher and microwave safe. And Heather is trying to get them into a retail setting like Bed Bath and Beyond or Macy’s. So if you have any contacts with buyers there please let Heather know. Remember portion control is connected to weight control. Check out her bowls at www.measureupbowl.com

How To Read Egg Labels

by FatGuy on September 28, 2009

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to read egg labels. Since the FDA likes to put labels on all foods, eggs have not escaped their scrutiny. So now all you have to figure out is what all these new labels mean. Omega 3 Fortified means the hens were fed omega 3s in their feed, which therefore make their eggs omega fortified. When an egg is said to come from free range or cage free hen that means the hens have a less stressful, healthier lifestyle which in turns makes a healthier egg – an egg with similar attributes of an egg from the good old days when chickens and horses ran free.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. icon for podpress  interview w dr david kessler endo fo overeating: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on one of Dr Fitness’ favorite authors. Dr. David Kessler. He is the former Commissioner of the FDA (the same guy who changed food labels and took on the tobacco industry)  and author of the bestselling book The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite. This book will change the way you look at food. In the book Dr Kessler cracks the code to why you overeat. He explains that the food industry has literally made it a science to figure out exactly what makes food so delicious and addicting. He calls these foods hyper palatable. These hyper-palatable foods have been engineered in food labs to actually change your brain chemistry so that you crave and want to eat more. Restaurants and food manufacturers combine fat, sugar and salt in cleverly delicious ways to make you want it more and more. They have come up with foods that have never existed before and that humans desire with such demand that many of these companies are multi-billion dollar money machines. Dr Kessler explains why you overeat and gives you some ways to stop. And stopping is not as simple as trying harder and having willpower because these foods change your brain chemistry much like drugs or nicotine does. In order to stop you have to treat your favorite trigger foods much like an alcoholic treats liquor. You have to avoid it and avoid the places it is served. And you can’t connect the food with emotional memories. Try to reward yourself and celebrate in other ways rather than eating and going out to restaurants.  To learn more please go to his website www.theendofovereatingbook.com

On This week’s show, I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with my close friend, Lisa Lillien, aka “The Hungry Girl.” She should really change her name to the “The Hungry Hot Girl.” She is a foodologist with an incredible knack for knowing everything about low calorie snacks, drinks, meals, recipes, and anything a person would want to know about saving calories. Her website www.Hungry-Girl.com is the most popular food and dieting newsletters out there and approaching 300,000 daily readers to her amazing newsletter. Each day her newsletter explores the latest food trends or a hot new low cal tasty product, a great recipe substitute – check out why she uses pumpkin in so many things and her very popular shocker segment where she warns readers of some products which might be over-promising or even misleading. I read it every day and learn something new every day and so will you!!! Tonight she talked about the Veggie Booty and Jamba Juice cookie scandals. Please listen to this revealing interview and when you’re done go to her website www.hungry-girl.com and subscribe to her newsletter. You will love it. Guaranteed! Watch for her new book coming out in the spring!!!

We also had on Hottie, Gillian Marloth, one of the creators of the best selling Exercise DVD series “Yoga Booty Ballet” Gillian was a blast and spent a lot of time explaining exactly what makes Yoga Booty Ballet so different. YBB is not Gandhi’s yoga! This is a mash-up of traditional yoga with funky hip hop dancing, ballet as well as meditation and mindfulness. Not only is this a great cardio workout but you also will improve your flexibility and balance as well. I promise you have not had a workout like this. Gillian has a studio in Los Angeles called Swerve(www.Swervestudio.com) where you can rub noses with the A listers who also love to get there groove on with Yoga Booty Ballet. If you are looking for something new and different to shake up your exercise program it is definitely worth your time to check out this series of exercises dvds. There is a reason they are number one and to purchase her “Yoga Booty Ballet” Dvd’s please go to www.starzhoment.com. Please go to Gillian’s website www.yogabootyballet.com or check out her exercise studio at www.swervestudio.com

Tonight I talked about “Bizarre Natural Cures”. Here are a few of my strange but true natural cures of common ailments. Number 1, if you have a tickle in your throat then scratch your ear and it will go away. Number 2, if you are with a low talker then turn to them with your right ear. your right hear can pick up low voices better than your left ear. And Number 3, if you are going to the doctor and he is giving you an injection – if you cough right before the injection, it will lessen the pain – it works for kids. Listen to the show to hear why this is so and all the skinny!!!

Tune in to this Thursday’s show when we talk Susi May, from the awesome www.Fitsugar.com, Russell Harrison from a cool company, Poseidon Technologies…they have a device designed to alert a potential drowning person in a pool. This is a strong interest of mine since a young boy drowned in a wave pool at an amusement park last week…We also have Jessica Myers from Garmin to talk about their personal GPS system with a heart rate monitor!!!You know exactly where you are and how far you have gone. Plus, we have former Ms. Fitness USA, Minna Lessig, I also have more tips for you
