Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy Interview Dr Lisa Young Author of Oprah Magazine’s Best New Health Book, The Portion Teller Plan

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

icon for podpress  Interview with dr lisa young portion teller: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

On tonight’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy learn all about how to get a handle on the portion size of our meals from Dr Lisa Young, author of the Portion Teller and the Portion Teller Plan.

Dr Young is a nationally recognized nutrition consultant and faculty member at New York University. Dr. Young has been counseling adults and children for more than 15 years,. Lisa is an expert on portion control, and nutrition. Young is regularly featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, Newsweek, Self, Fitness, and Glamour. She has also been featured on national television including the Today Show, ABC News, CBS News, and CNN, and was in the film Super Size Me.

The Portion Teller Plan will teach you how to understand portion sizes so that you can lose weight and stop dieting. Are you a mindless muncher who snacks all day, a dinner lover who enjoys one big meal a day, or maybe a volume eater who always wants to sit down with a huge plate of food at every meal? No matter what your eating habits, The Portion Teller Plan offers a personalized eating plan that is right for you.

Instead of giving up the foods you love, learn to smart-size them. Would you ever consider going to the kitchen in the morning and grabbing five slices of bread for breakfast? No? Just one bagel or perhaps a bran muffin is more like it, right? Well, think again. Your morning bagel or muffin is the same as eating five slices of bread, maybe more. That’s most of your grain servings for the day.

And, that steak you ate last night? For all the calories and protein you consumed, you might as well have eaten 18 eggs. More than double the amount of protein you need in a day.

Surprised at just how much you are eating? Dr. Lisa Young isn’t. She has been studying how Americans eat for more than a decade, and what she found is astonishing. Portion sizes have subtly and steadily increased over the past thirty years and are now two to five times larger than they were in the past. Even the average dinner plate has grown several inches to accommodate more food. The portions we’re served are getting bigger and we keep eating. The end result? That’s right. Americans are getting fatter. Not just the Fat Guy. For more information about Dr Young and her books please go to her website www.portionteller.com

Dr Musante’s says that “Food can be the best medicine OR the worst poison for your body.” Remember that the next time you supersize something!

The Structure House Weigh Loss Plan focuses on changing yourself in deeper, more significant, more durable ways than what you can measure simply by standing on your bathroom scale.

For over thirty years, Dr Musante has helped overweight and obese men and women learn about change at Structure House, the residential program he founded in Durham, North Carolina. Approximately one thousand people participate in their programs there each year. It’s like a college campus. Some people are 10, 20, 30 pounds over their desired weight. Others are even heavier and would be considered obese. Still others are morbidly obese—so overweight that their health is in immediate jeopardy.

Almost all of the people who have come to Structure House understand that being overweight can lead to medical problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and other serious health risks. These people stay at Structure House for a weekend or even a month learn first hand about the possibilities for change and about the skills that make change possible. For more information about Dr Musante’s book (which is now available in paperback) and his amazing weight loss program please go to his website www.structurehouse.com

Most of the moves are familiar, like lunges and squats, making it easy to master—yet there are challenging moves like in-and-out push-ups.

Lauren guides viewers through cardio segments and muscle-toning exercises, letting viewers know what they can expect. Muscles are worked from head to toe, mostly with the help of hand weights. Fat Guy Worried “Hearty Eaters” Are Getting Banned From Buffets

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Recently in Lousiana a fellow “hearty eater” was banned from a buffet just because he could put away a little more seafood than the other less “hearty eaters” that partake in buffet style restaurants.

Read it for yourself from the part where the wiatress explained why this poor guys were being charged twice as much as everyone else.
“She says, ‘Y’all fat, and y’all eat too much,’” Labit said.

Labit and Borrelli said they felt discriminated against because of their size. “I was stunned, that somebody would say something like that. I ain’t that fat, I only weigh 277,” Borrelli said, adding that a waitress told him he looked like he a had a “baby in the belly.”

Houma accountant Thomas Campo said the men were charged an extra $10 each on Dec. 21 because they made a habit of dining exclusively on the more expensive seafood dishes, including crab legs and frog legs.

Fat Guy’s Favorite Healthy-ish Snacks For 2007

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

This year Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy were fortunate enough to have a lot of great food and drink related guests on our radio show this year. So since all the other big media stars were doing year end lists, I thought I’d do it too. So without further ado, here is the Fat Guy’s list of favorite almost healthy foods and/or drinks for 2007.

Number 5. Lesser Evil popcorn snacks. I like cocoa and cinnamon. My wife likes the Krinkle Sticks.

Number 4. Fizzy Lizzy sparkling fruit drink. All flavors are awesome.

Number 3. PopChips. I love the Barbeque.

Number 2. Holey Donuts. 300 calorie cinnamon rolls - enough said.

Number 1. Tavalon Tea. I must drink the lemon grass green tea everyday or I get even more curmudgeony!

That’s it for now I can’t wait to eat and drink my way through 2008!

New Study Says Parents of Fat Kids Are in Denial.

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Just as everyones perception of portion sizes have been distorted it seems that our perception of what fat people look like has also been distorted. A recent study by Dr. Matthew M. Davis, a University of Michigan professor of pediatrics and internal medicine shows that parents are the last to realize that they’re kid should drop a few pounds.

Here’s a tip from the Fat Guy to determine if you have a fat kid - if you are buying clothes for your kid and it has an L or XL then you’re kid is probably overweight. I don’t know if you knew this but L stands for Large and XL stands for Extra Large. you see that is not just the size of the shirt it is also the size of the person wearing the shirt.

Here’s a recap of the results of the study… The Michigan researchers said that, too, suggests parents underestimate their children’s weight.

If your kid is overweight here are three easy things you can do…Weight Loss Tip 1-stop bring junk food into the house. The last time I checked kids don’t do the shopping and most kids are not going to waste their allowance on Pop Tarts. Weight Loss Tip 2-don’t let your kid weasel out of PE make sure your kid does some physical activity every day. Make him walk the dog, make her play outside whether they want to or not. And Weight Loss Tip 3-no liquid calories - more water more watered down fruit juice. That’s pretty much all they should be drinking.

First Fat Guy’s Wife Get Stomach Virus Then NY Times Reports On It. Coincidence?

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Earlier this week my wife had a stomach virus. It was so bad she missed work. She tried to pin it on some bad hummus, but I’ve watched enough House and Scrubs to know it was a virus. Now just a few days later boom! I get confirmation of my theory from the New York Times.

According to them…Cases of norovirus — commonly known as the stomach flu — have spiked in recent weeks, the city’s Health Department announced this morning. Emergency room visits for vomiting and diarrhea — the virus’s most common symptoms — have jumped to 500 a day from 300 a day in November.

Norovirus is a seasonal illness that typically peaks during the winter months.

Here are the official Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy tips in order for you to prevent getting the stomach virus this winter and to deal with it if you get it.

  1. Wash your hands like a crazy person. Think Monk! You know how I feel about Purell.
  2. Make sure the surfaces you prepare food or cook on is clean. Remember Monk clean is what we’re shooting for.
  3. If you get sick stay away from everyone. Miss work, duh. Quarantine yourself from your family. Sleep a lot.
  4. Drink lots of fluids. PowerAde, water, tea.

The Hungry Girl Dishes The Goods On False Claims & Yoga Booty Ballet Creator, Gillian Marloth, Shares Her Mantra

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

On This week’s show, I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with my close friend, Lisa Lillien, aka “The Hungry Girl.” She should really change her name to the “The Hungry Hot Girl.” She is a foodologist with an incredible knack for knowing everything about low calorie snacks, drinks, meals, recipes, and anything a person would want to know about saving calories. Her website www.Hungry-Girl.com is the most popular food and dieting newsletters out there and approaching 300,000 daily readers to her amazing newsletter. Each day her newsletter explores the latest food trends or a hot new low cal tasty product, a great recipe substitute - check out why she uses pumpkin in so many things and her very popular shocker segment where she warns readers of some products which might be over-promising or even misleading. I read it every day and learn something new every day and so will you!!! Tonight she talked about the Veggie Booty and Jamba Juice cookie scandals. Please listen to this revealing interview and when you’re done go to her website www.hungry-girl.com and subscribe to her newsletter. You will love it. Guaranteed! Watch for her new book coming out in the spring!!!

We also had on Hottie, Gillian Marloth, one of the creators of the best selling Exercise DVD series “Yoga Booty Ballet” Gillian was a blast and spent a lot of time explaining exactly what makes Yoga Booty Ballet so different. YBB is not Gandhi’s yoga! This is a mash-up of traditional yoga with funky hip hop dancing, ballet as well as meditation and mindfulness. Not only is this a great cardio workout but you also will improve your flexibility and balance as well. I promise you have not had a workout like this. Gillian has a studio in Los Angeles called Swerve(www.Swervestudio.com) where you can rub noses with the A listers who also love to get there groove on with Yoga Booty Ballet. If you are looking for something new and different to shake up your exercise program it is definitely worth your time to check out this series of exercises dvds. There is a reason they are number one and to purchase her “Yoga Booty Ballet” Dvd’s please go to www.starzhoment.com. Please go to Gillian’s website www.yogabootyballet.com or check out her exercise studio at www.swervestudio.com

Tonight I talked about “Bizarre Natural Cures”. Here are a few of my strange but true natural cures of common ailments. Number 1, if you have a tickle in your throat then scratch your ear and it will go away. Number 2, if you are with a low talker then turn to them with your right ear. your right hear can pick up low voices better than your left ear. And Number 3, if you are going to the doctor and he is giving you an injection - if you cough right before the injection, it will lessen the pain - it works for kids. Listen to the show to hear why this is so and all the skinny!!!

Tune in to this Thursday’s show when we talk Susi May, from the awesome www.Fitsugar.com, Russell Harrison from a cool company, Poseidon Technologies…they have a device designed to alert a potential drowning person in a pool. This is a strong interest of mine since a young boy drowned in a wave pool at an amusement park last week…We also have Jessica Myers from Garmin to talk about their personal GPS system with a heart rate monitor!!!You know exactly where you are and how far you have gone. Plus, we have former Ms. Fitness USA, Minna Lessig, I also have more tips for you

The Doctor had to bring some great eating tips because of the quality of the guests we had on and he did. So we had another installment of …Dr Fitness’ “Things You Can Do Today” To Lose Weight Tomorrow. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness’ secrets about how to eat healthy when you go out to eat…Number 1, always get half of your food to go. Do this before they even bring it out to the table. Restaurant portions are so large you can get half to go and not even notice it. Number 2, if you are going to get a dessert just get one and share that around the table. And Number 3, start eating the low calorie healthy foods first and slowly work your way to the meats and starches. Hopefully you’ll get full before you get to those higher calorie foods and stop eating. There were a couple more tips from Dr. Fitness, but you’ll have to listen to the podcast or go to his blog to get the rest.

Kathie made sure she was in the studio so she could talk with Jack Lalanne. She’ll be away for the next couple of weeks as she films her Real Savvy Moms show in hot spots around the world. Remember she is one of the top feet and legs model’s out there… she is so hot she got to be a body double for Alyssa Milano a few weeks ago. Be sure to check out Kathie’s website www.getkathie.com. Also check her out on www.RealSavvyMoms.com.

Also once again, I need you to please do me a favor. My nine year kid Max made his radio debut in his new show “Kid Power Radio.” This is a great show for your kids. It is kind of like a kids version of David Spade’s “Showbiz Show” on Comedy Central. Max recaps the week in entertainment and gives his take and review of what he liked and didn’t like on TV, at the movies in books and in music. Please go to his site and download the show for your kid. And if your kid sends Max an email he’ll read it on the air next week. The show can be found at www.kidpower.libsyn.com and you can email Max at RadioStarMax@Yahoo.com. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
