interview with tiffany davis daily candy atlanta foodie vacations [ Warning: parse_url(/wp-content/plugins/podpress/podpress_backend.php?action=getduration&filename=http://media.libsyn.com/media/healthexpertradio/Dr_Fitness_and_the_Fat_Guy_06152008_Tiffany_Davis_Daily_Candy_Foodie_Vacations_Interview.MP3) [ function.parse-url]: Unable to parse url in /home/drfitn5/public_html/wp-content/plugins/podpress/podpress.php on line 151 0:30m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download
On tonight’s show, Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy learn all about foodie vacations, low cal margarita’s and more from our good friend Tiffany Davis, Atlanta Editor of the Daily Candy. She had some great tips on how to stay at home and have your own Foodie Vacation. She called it a Foodie Vacay, but she is much hipper than me and can pull that off. She also told us how she’s dating a chef and now all her tips seem to be about food. Here are the notes she sent us on everything she talked about.
1. www.bethennybakes.com
- ever watch the Real Housewives of NYC?
- Martha Stewart Apprentice finalist Bethenny Frankel whips up nutritious, luxurious recipes (she’s a celeb chef) that women are clamoring for after watching the show.
- She’s recently posted a recipe called “The Skinny Girl Margarita” that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
2. www.wildhibiscus.com
- packaged in spring water and shipped right from the aussie outback
- perfect when you’re tiring of being “good” and having wine spritzers. opt for one of these in some champagne or to spice up a spritzer
3. flax seeds are my newest obsession
- healthy food coaches love them because they literally can be sprinkled into just about ANY recipe, smoothie, dessert, or pasta dish and do nothing but add fiber to a meal, which can make you feel satisfied all that much quicker
4. take yourself on a foodie vacay even if you can’t afford a real one!
- www.moderndaymasala.com (pan asian classics like butter chicken and spiced cauliflower)
- www.currysimple.com (thai, indochine, and singaporean sauces)
5. grill, grill, grill!
- take fruits and vegetables out of the oven and onto meats instead of sauces and salty marinades.
- when it cools down, invest in a grill pan. they’re quick and cook food really evenly on top of adding a grill-like flavor to ‘em.
6. True Lemon/Lime
- new product that’s pure lemon, lime, and orange essence in a single serve pouch or shaker
- no cal, sugar, salt, or carbs!
7. Join a food co-op or start one
- if you were skeptical, gas prices might convince you now
- for a small member fee and about $25 a package, you have fresh vegetables and fruits on hand all the time

interview with sarah brown planet smoothie [ Warning: parse_url(/wp-content/plugins/podpress/podpress_backend.php?action=getduration&filename=http://media.libsyn.com/media/healthexpertradio/Dr_Fitness_and_the_Fat_Guy_06152008_Sarah_Brown_Planet_Smoothie_Interview.MP3) [ function.parse-url]: Unable to parse url in /home/drfitn5/public_html/wp-content/plugins/podpress/podpress.php on line 151 0:32m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download
On tonight’s show, Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy learn all about Planet Smoothie and their 99 cent Smoothie Days from Sarah Brown. BTW that is not a picture of Sarah(on the right) - as far as we know. Since 1995, Planet Smoothie has fallen somewhere between refreshingly level-headed and sanely-visionary. “Fast fuel” on the go, for any diet or none at all.Low fat, low carb, low cal.High protein, high energy, high in vitamins and supplements.Fresh smoothies, healthy snacks, and, through their new Planet Smoothie Café locations, sandwiches and salads.
Just say ‘no’ to fat and grease. Planet Smoothie is trying to change the way the Planet eats.
Planet Smoothie is Kathie’s favorite Smoothie joint. She loves the Wheat Grass. Dr Fitness and her kept obsessing about how much they liked the smell. Dr Fitness is always talking about he drinks fruit smoothies at home. Now he can get them when he is on the road.
Sarah told us all about 99 cent Smoothie Days at Planet Smoothie. That’s when you can get inexpensive smoothies and not little ones either - you get 22 ounces of smoothie goodness one day each month throughout the summer. So go to their website to see when the next one takes place.
I called Sarah a Smoothie Sommelier and you can bet you can be seeing that tagline show up in their ads soon. The nice thing about Planet Smoothie is that they offer so many low cal and healthy choices. And they don’t give you a hard time if you want to mix and match ingredients. Like substituting blackberries for strawberries to save a few calories.
For more information please go to their website www.planetsmoothie.com. Planet Smoothie has drinks with fun names, lots and lots of fruit that are a perfect treat for the dog days of summer. They also have all the nutritional information on their website which will help you make an educated choice.

A funny thing happened to me the other day when I was reading PLoS, a peer-reviewed open-access journal published by the Public Library of Science. They had this research that explained that you might live an additonal 14 years if you do four fairly simple things…
- Drink alcohol in moderation
- Don’t smoke
- Exercise
- Eat an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables
Now it’s nice to know that what I have been saying forever has been re-confirmed and you would think adding 14 years to your life would be encouragement enough for most people… but still a lot of people are finding it difficult to do these 4 simple things and that’s kind of frustrating.
Now the really big dilemma I have is should I tell the Fat Guy about this study? Do I really want him around for an additional 14 years?

It has been well established that the Fat Guy has no friends and spends way too much time on the internet. I feel a little funny referring to myself in the third person, but I have not found a better way for you the reader to know if this is a post from me or Dr Fitness. So deal with it.
While browsing through the Archives of Internal Medicine as I sometimes do on dreary Wednesday afternoons. I read the conclusion of an Abstract that said that there was “strong evidence” that following a Mediterranean diet lowers the risk of dying prematurely from pretty much everything including cancer.
You can read the abstract for yourself here. But be warned they used a large number of big words that I did not really understand.
As you know if you have listened to the Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy radio show that Dr Fitness is a big fan of the Mediterranean diet. He loves fruit, veggies, olive oil and pizza. I am not sure if pizza is actually part of that diet but it is kind of Italian.
