In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some tips to help you prevent holiday weight gain. Holiday travel and parties make it a tough time to lose weight – so modify your goal just to stay at the same weight during the holidays. When you travel by car be sure to prepare and bring healthy snacks with you in a cooler. Cut up veggies or make healthy sandwiches instead of driving through fast food restaurants. If you are going to the airport try and eat a healthy meal before you get there instead of eating an unhealthy meal at the terminal. And on the flight bring your own healthy snack instead of relying on whatever the airline is handing out. And remember, when you arrive at your destination getting in your daily run or walk is a great way to take a break from all that family fun. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. by FatGuy on December 15, 2009

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain some of the hidden danger related to your treadmill. As more and more treadmills are showing up in homes more and more kids (and adults) are getting injured on them. About 25,000 kids are injured on home exercise equipment each year. A good thing to do is give your child a safety lesson on proper treadmill use and try and be in the same room as he/she uses the treadmill in case something does happen. Always use the wristband cut off switch and don’t do tricks like walking on it backwards or spinning around on it like the OKGO music video.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Christopher McDougall, former war correspondent and now contributing editor for Men’s Health and author of the NY Times Bestseller Born to Run. A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, And the Greatest Race The World Has Never Seen. Christopher shared his thoughts on the benefits of running barefoot. After suffering from several running related injuries Christopher began researching why an Indian tribespeople in Mexico can run for miles barefoot or in thin soled sandals and they weren’t suffering from the injuries that people in the US suffer from. Just as running was a way of life for these people, Chris found that being sedentary is a way of life for most Americans these days. Christopher determined that running shoes were the problem and he began running barefoot. He found no evidence that running shoes actually prevent injuries. A short time later his injuries went away and he began enjoying long runs again. He has found running barefoot helps him concentrate more on each step and that may help prevent injuries and help him run faster. He recommended the website www.runningbarefoot.org for more information about barefoot running. His book is more about this Indian tribe and his adventures with them. This is where he learned barefoot running and actually saw and took part in an amazing 50+ mile race amongst the tribes. It is Dr Fitness approved you should definitely check it out. It gives runners and aspiring runners something to think about. You can find this awesome book at Amazon and in bookstores everywhere.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy shares tips on how your diet can effect your bone health. Building strong bones is important if you want to avoid getting osteoporosis.  A recent study found that in Asian countries they don’t consume the amount of dairy we consume here yet they have a low incidence of osteoporosis. The Asian diet consists of low acid foods like fruits and vegetables that help the body consume the calcium they get through the foods they eat. The thinking is that because we consume so much acidic animal protein here we are having a difficult time absorbing the calcium and that is why we suffer from osteoporosis at greater rates. So for good bone health and strong bones to prevent osteoporosis try a low acid diet that is high in fruits and veggies and low in meat. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explains how to protect yourself from falling in your home. Broken hips are one of the most common reasons seniors are hospitalized and incapacitated. Some of the ways to prevent falling at home, (which is a common reason seniors break their hips) are: to get rid of loose rugs in the house; also make sure stairs are well lit and clear of any object; put handrails in the showers, keep a flashlight near the bed for those late night trips to the bathroom; and put slip resistant trugs in the bathrooms. You can prevent damage by rolling the windows up in your car or wearing ear plugs. Which are probably good ideas, especially if you have some kids driving in the convertible with you. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with Dr Sandy Venditti, Canada’s favorite dentist. Dr Venditti explained the importance of good dental hygiene and shared some great health tips from her new book Pearls of Wisdom.

Dr. Venditti has been a practicing dentist for over 14 years and really looked beyond the gums and teeth of her patients. She witnessed the pain – the fear and confusion – behind their eyes.

She knew many of her patients didn’t need to be in her chair – that what she was treating was easily preventable.   As a traveling dentist, Dr. Sandy has treated patients of all ages and nationalities, and found the same problems, the same fears. Dr. Sandy is committed to educating her patients about gingivitis prevention. She says that a healthy body begins with a healthy mouth.

She believes that there is no good reason why three out of four adults over the age of 35 have gum disease and tooth decay remains the most common chronic condition among North American children.  She believes it is through education and counseling that we can begin to reverse these current statistics.
