First Fat Guy’s Wife Get Stomach Virus Then NY Times Reports On It. Coincidence?

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Earlier this week my wife had a stomach virus. It was so bad she missed work. She tried to pin it on some bad hummus, but I’ve watched enough House and Scrubs to know it was a virus. Now just a few days later boom! I get confirmation of my theory from the New York Times.

According to them…Cases of norovirus — commonly known as the stomach flu — have spiked in recent weeks, the city’s Health Department announced this morning. Emergency room visits for vomiting and diarrhea — the virus’s most common symptoms — have jumped to 500 a day from 300 a day in November.

Norovirus is a seasonal illness that typically peaks during the winter months.

Here are the official Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy tips in order for you to prevent getting the stomach virus this winter and to deal with it if you get it.

  1. Wash your hands like a crazy person. Think Monk! You know how I feel about Purell.
  2. Make sure the surfaces you prepare food or cook on is clean. Remember Monk clean is what we’re shooting for.
  3. If you get sick stay away from everyone. Miss work, duh. Quarantine yourself from your family. Sleep a lot.
  4. Drink lots of fluids. PowerAde, water, tea.

So The Fat Guy Uses A Lot Of Purell. Don’t Judge Him.

You think I’m bad with the Purell. My wife scoured about 4 different stores searching for the elusive Purell Gentle Foam until she heard a rumor it was available at Bed Bath & Beyond. That killed a Saturday for us. Purell is fast, easy and gets rid of germs. And since I mentioned we don’t do flu shots it is our best line of defense against the flu or any other germ thing. We should try and get someobdy from Purell on the Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy Radio Show. they’d be funny.

Here is a recent article on MSNBC affriming my craziness.

Pass the Purell: It’s hip to be germ-free

Superbugs and supercute sanitizing supplies spur cleaning craze

Also along the same lines I had a meeting this afternoon with Allan Hess, creator of the Airport Booties. You wear these bad boys when you are going through the security line at the airport. Go to his website and see for yourself how many germs are on an airport floor. When was the last time you saw someone with a mop around the security line? How about never.

Flu Shot? Fat Guy Says No But Uses A Lot Of Purell

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

I am not a big fan of shots in general and have never had a flu shot. I don’t get sick a lot and neither does my wife or kid. Recently at my kid’s 10 year check up the Doctor was about to give my kid the flu shot when I stopped him. The guy looked at me like I was crazy for not “protecting” my kid from a flu that he might not even get in the first place. I am all for preventative behaviors. Being the Fat Guy, means I don’t always take these preventive measures. But I don’t think it’s a good idea to over medicate oneself unless we’re talking about a sugar-induced coma. So we passed on the flu shot but are going through a bottle of Purell about every other day.

Here is a recent article from the NY Times that says preschoolers and/or kids in day care in New Jersey are required to get an annual flu shot… What do you think?

Despite opposition from numerous parents and children’s rights advocates, a public health advisory panel voted on Monday to require all children in New Jersey who attend preschool or are in day care to get annual flu vaccinations . The measure, expected to be approved by the state health commissioner in the next week, will make New Jersey the first state in the country to mandate such immunizations

Skin Infections and Nasty Cell Phone Germs

Monday, July 16th, 2007

If you get bugged out by sleeping in Hotel rooms, or using public toilets, turn away from this article from switched.com. But don’t do what Dr. Fitness did and cover your phone with Purell. Maybe those Saniwipes by clorox will work better!!!! Check out this Story!!! Professor Charles Gerba of the University of Arizona is very interested in what’s growing on your cell phone, and we’re not talking about your bill. He’s been testing cell phones and finding that, in general, they’re riddled with germs and bacteria that can cause skin infections.
