In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain why humans are built for distance running. Almost half a million people competed in marathons and about 90% of those runners have suffered from some sort of training injury. A new book titled Born To Run by Christopher McDougall talks in depth about this and that excites Dr Fitness for a couple of reasons. Number one because it is also a Springsteen song and Number two he too loves to run. According to this book the human body is designed to run long distances. From an evolutionary standpoint that is how we could best hunt for food. We were not as fast as the animals we hunted but we could track them for long distances and wear them down and when they got tired we would kill them and eat them. What makes us good distance runners is our ability to sweat and the length of our toes. The book also talks about the importance of proper footwear when running – thin soled running shoes seem to be better than those heavily padded ones. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. The Doctor had some fitness tips in his latest installment of …Dr Fitness’ “Things You Can Do Today” To Get Ready For Your First 10k Road Race Tomorrow. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness’ secrets about the things you should do to prepare for your first road race. Number 1, do not start off too fast – you are going to want to shoot off the starting gun like a rocket but don’t do it – keep a steady pace. Number 2, wear the right clothes – chafing stinks – ask the Fat Guy he’ll tell you. And Number 3, eat the right foods and drink the beverages. He had a few more tips and he gave lots more detail in these tips but since I was on vacation i didn’t listen to them but you’ll have to listen to get them.
Kathie Larkin was in the house and she did a great job taking the Fat Guy’s place in the studio. She told us all about her own tennis experience as well as lots of other good stuff. You know Kathie as the host of Real Savvy Moms. Real Savvy Moms is a great show for moms that is available on most Public Broadcasting Stations around the US and online. On tonight’s show, Doctor Fitness and the Fat Guy get the skinny about weight loss and fitness from Sgt Harvey Walden, star of the Celebrity Fit Club on VH1 and England’s “Fat Club” Sgt Harvey has whipped celebrities like: Gary Busey, Tempestt Bledsoe, Kelly LeBrock, Tina Yothers and Vincent Pastore into shape on his popular fitness and weight loss TV show. He recently completed “The Celebrity Fit Club Bootcamp Workout” dvd and his book “Harvey’s No Excuses Workout” will be out in August. Sgt Harvey believes in tough love and doesn’t take kindly to excuses. So if you want some of his best tips and a little behind the scenes gossip from one of TV’s best personal trainers you’re going to love tonight’s show.
Check out First Sgt Harvey Walden’s website www.harveywalden.com for more info.
We also got to spend time with Tanya Shorrock, Diet Nutritionist for Diet Classics. If you have listened to Dr Fitness for any length of time you know that he is dead set against any diet pill. So interviewing Tanya was pretty intense. She held her own with the Fat Guy and there were plenty of laughs. Her feelings are if you are going to spend money for diet pills at least Diet Classics pills are half the price of the name brand ones. Tanya is a nutritionist and a personal trainer in California and she herself doesn’t use these pills and all she is trying to do is to give some good information to those people out there who are going to try diet pills anyway. She knows that the only way to lose weight is through eating right and exercising.
The Doctor had to bring some great workout tips because of the quality of the guests we had on and he did. So we had another installment of …Dr Fitness’ “Things You Can Do Today” To Lose Weight Tomorrow. Here are a few of Dr. Fitness’ secrets about how to make sure you are doing a well balanced workout when you strength train…Number 1, always do a full body workout. Don’t do arms one day and legs another day. Number 2, only do 8-12 exercises when you workout at the gym. And Number 3, don’t spend too much time on one body part, especially your core. Those one hour abs classes are a waste of time and you can get hurt.
Kathie was in Michigan doing something for the Real Savvy Moms TV show but she did give away some of our books which made the doctor happy. She’ll be away for the next couple of weeks as she films her Real Savvy Moms show in hot spots around the world. Remember she is one of the top feet and legs model’s out there… she is so hot she got to be a body double for Alyssa Milano a few weeks ago. Be sure to check out Kathie’s website www.getkathie.com. Also check her out on www.RealSavvyMoms.com.
