On tonight’s show, Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy we were fortunate to have Living is Winning Director Linda Burns and Andrew “Drew” Johnston, star of this new documentary that follows Drew’s rise from a cancer diagnosis to him competing in an Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii.

This is a truly inspirational story - Drew started out as a competitive pro cyclist, but after a series of accidents and concussions, he was forced to put down his bike.

Drew quickly changed gears and found success and a new career as a triathlete. But 2004 brought devastating news for his family, his friends and his future. Drew was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) and his body literally broke down.

But two years later, after taking Gleevac, an oral chemotherapy drug, and continuing his commitment to a healthy organic lifestyle, rigorous targeted exercise and an extremely positive mental attitude, Drew is in molecular remission.

Today, Drew competes at triathlons and Ironman events throughout the country with remarkable results. Drew’s life story serves as an inspiration to others, to strive to be your best in every aspect of life and to never give up your dreams, no matter how distant they may seem.

They both explained how this documentary was a true labor of love. One of Drew’s childhood friend’s thought his story would make a good film and he started filming. Then once they started people became so moved that more and more people wanted to get involved. The documentary captures a person overcoming great odds but it is done in a real life entertaining way that also captures the spirit of the triathlete culture and while their may only be one race winner everyone who competes feels like a winner as well.

Their goal with the Living is Winning movie is to reach audiences all over the world, engaging them with the passion that exists in the sport of triathlons to encourage the passion that is necessary to continue the search for a cure for cancer. Living is Winning will entertain everyone from triathletes to couch potatoes with action packed race footage, moving interviews, lots of humor and a great original score. They hope to inspire every generation to eat healthy, exercise and become socially responsible through organizations like Team in Training and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Here are his tips.

#4. If you’re thinking about joining a gym and you’ve never done it before then you’ll have better results if you find a partner to help you lose weight instead. #3. Before you spend thousands of dollars on a treadmill or another large piece of exercise equipment spend fifty bucks on a heart rate monitor which will help you a lot more. #2. Don’t add another diet book to your diet book collection just eat smaller portions 25% less per meal should do it. #1. I know you’re tempted to try those diet pills, the commercials are very persuasive. Don’t do it. diet pills don’t address the behaviors that cuased you to put on the weight in the first place. Try to modify one behavior that’s causing you to put on weight instead!
